POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I write the way the schizophrenic, walking up and down the sidewalk in front of my house, screams profanity when he thinks he's all alone.
Liner Notes on a Lifetime of Repentance
God’s driving by in a Mercedes
And you’re in your boxers
Smoking a cigarette
On the side of the freeway
Outside of Vegas
Trying to hitch a ride.
The tequila, the bourbon
The dry mouth
And tobacco scorched throat;
They leave you like that
Sore and remorseful
On the shoulder
Of bum-fuck nowhere
Looking for a savior
In the passing headlights
PAIN: sunburns, blistered feet, cold sores
The clap, VD, emphysema, COPD, whatever
PAIN is good
When discernment is lost
Numb is painful, and...

Our Lady of the Snow
He saw her on the prairie
Just inches above the frozen clay
And how the wind did buffet her
With a chill of minus twenty eight
In a wispy and sinuous way.
The ice did hang like the dew
From her arms and each pale breast
Yet the grass still swayed in the moonlight
With the rising and falling of his chest.
Her eyes glistened so sweetly
And her lips, just the faintest of red
And he fell at her feet like a dead man
When she reached out and touched his head.
So gently, he swooned in her gaze
And clung to her...

Under the Twisting Willow
If cold could freeze the tears of the mourning
Or crack the bells and keep them from tolling
If it all came to an end one snowy morning
Would the wheels on the hearse also stop rolling
Would Death vomit up her fat swollen belly
Into my trembling hands or melt the snow
As it rippled across my face like jelly
And fell over all I had ever hoped to know
Twisting, turning, falling from the sky
Foaming out of my television screen
A frozen yard, pick axe, a bucket of lye
And yet that sad procession can still be seen

Sooobie G, the Gangster Pixie
Scoobie G, the Gangster Pixie
You stole my heart so violently
And viciously did I yearn to return
The favor.
I couldn’t sleep; i couldn’t swim
It was 3AM, too late for the gym
And every night, the light was dim; you were
To die for.
Jez-bel, thief with wings, Tinkerbell
Dammit to hell, witches, spells
I know you and all your
Fairy lore
Oh fairest of the fairy faes.
Did you think I’d forgive so easily
Let you fly away? No, no, no, I
Wanted more.
But love is war and you know the score ...

The Egg Man and the Bruja
And coughing up words
In the black shade
On her black feet
Hind feet like rat’s feet
Tails in traps tied to poles
To a pole
It was
Tied to a pole
In the shade
Of a Eucalyptus Tree. I,
Eggman; goldfish in a bowl
Pater Noster
Qui es en caelis

Vultures, corpses:
In the grass, bushes, or creek
On the rails or rocks
In the ditch or dust
Beneath the overpass
In the street

Sitting Alone, on the Isle of Patmos, Watching the Angels of God Rock and Roll
Silence has a voice
It can scream
There was silence in Heaven
When He snapped the Seventh Seal open
Usually, it means to hit the gas
And your in some crap
Part of South Los Angeles
Other times, it’s not that simple
Even the strap on the table
Is powerless
When all you can see for miles around
Is a cup of disappearing coffee
And the Death Angel
Smiling feverishly
Spinning her scythe in the air
Like a baton
It can scream
There was silence in Heaven

Quinctilius Varus: Give Me Back My Legions
My heroes have always been devils,
Milton’s Lucifer, John’s Apollyon;
The convict in Wilde’s Goal
The one who let his rage have its way.
Not heroes
Please...
But devils, assassins
And when I was a kid
They were crawling around in the weeds
Cradling M16s
Sometimes drawing down on their neighbors
With a broomstick
From their bedroom windows
When they were home on leave
The rockets red glare
Body parts in the air
Whatever, whatever
I knew one,
He drove a utility van...

The Love Gun
The walls become porous
Quivering pinpricks of red against waxpaper white
Skin
Lips, by the hundreds
Beckon, curse, suck, pucker, scream, purse
Pulpy and red
Quivering
It’s time for them to feed.
Yesterday, they were eyes
Staring at me; I stabbed them straight out, they bled
And
Now this
I slipped one a microdot
Watched it dissolve on her tongue like a communion wafer
The cute pair, just for kicks
Now there’s drool on the floor
But the doors locked
It would’ve opened by now
...

El Dia de los Muertos
Yellow blooms, ruptured and craving the sun
Twisting in the fluorescent light-an asphalt liar
Flickering, chain link, a brown laceration
Running the length of the rusty wire
Braided cable and brittle coarse fiber.
Tangled, a flower in each open eye
Always happy all the time, there’s no fire
In your soul; you’re always high
A tulip in manure, don’t you wanna fly
Slip off the slimy cement, feel the deep
Rushing water and grainy charcoal sky
The roar of splintered timbers; my love
Leap off the levee with me, and let the...

The Caduceus
He smile is a ship on the horizon
A silhouette mocking the sun
Lilting and pregnant, caught
Between Heaven and Hell; coming
Or going, I don't know.
Flashes of light in a gale
Lanterns swinging on a mast
Violent tempest, fleeting
Shards of yellow fire, twisting
In the mist stare at me.
Billowing in a blackened mirror
Rippling canvas beats the air
Indignant shadows, loom
On the periphery, swirling
Clouds crown and cover Her.
Tendrils of emerald green
Fluttering in the current

Crawling Like a Worm Through the Soil of Eden
And with each day
I'm reminded of rose petals
Curling in the gentle breeze
Of an August afternoon
The way your eyelashes do:
Prairie grass
Batting at the stem
Together
In waves
With the wind
Or lillies
In a flower bed
Leaning out
In the fading light
Of an Autumn evening.
Each day, I look at you
Like into a window
I want to climb through:
A thief
At the Pearly Gates
Trying to find another way in.
I'm reminded of rose petals
Curling in the gentle breeze
Of an August afternoon
The way your eyelashes do:
Prairie grass
Batting at the stem
Together

La Llorona Haunts More than the Border
In the back of a whorehouse in Tucson
In her arms, I drifted away
The music was ringing, la llorona
Was singing a lovesong
And how I wanted to stay
In Cuidad Acuna, or Juarez
Or on the border, here in Nogales.
A woman was crying outside
In a fit of heated despair
I thought of the Virgin, and started to miss
Her embrace and cold tender stare
And I said a prayer
Hail Mary, you're so full of grace
The Lord is with thee, and the Lord was with me
And your black eyes are still haunting me
Hold me sweet...
