POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm just a human living my life, and this is where I spill the stuff I can't say out loud. Sometimes the words arrange themselves nicely, and that's pretty cool.

Sonnet Interruptus
Some mornings, upon waking I perceive
my thoughts in iambic pentameter.
As words churn, there’s a hope I might conceive
some poetry that won’t taste too bitter.
But then life knocks, and asks me for a drive,
There’s dog vomit, and groceries to get.
The selfish hobby gets shoved to back seat,
And as you can see rhyme goes out the door!
With research, schoolwork, kids and household tasks,
Fourteen lines really is too much to ask!

The day all the socks matched up
I awoke gently, wrapped in sunbeams and your leisurely arms.
The coffee was strong and patient.
All the pieces fit smoothly.
The poems wrote themselves, and rock ‘n roll did the chores.
Words were enjoyed for soul-sharing and fun, as shame took a long vacation.
All the meetings were constructive and punctual.
Laughter flickered like warming flames between songs and friends and forest adventures.
Ocean thunder cracked my heart wide open.
All the flies left me alone in the garden.

As you're walking out the door.
The fact remains I love you
even as you walk away.
You seem to see me as a saint
without a role to play.
You think you’re noble, sparing me
the darkness of your heart;
I’d rather taste the depths of you
than spend our lives apart.
It’s true you’re flawed, but so am I.
I challenge you – be bold!
We’ll walk tightropes together,
making both our half-hearts whole.
I’m not a child; my sacrifices
have come willingly,
for every pain has opened me
to greater ecstasy.
What makes you think you can...

Beach thoughts
Jellyfish
In the shallows amongst the rocks
floating like a mucousy clot
rising & falling with the breath of the ocean
Shape-shifting, expanding
and with one big push
moving on to the next waving clump of seaweed
then the next
and the next…
Does it care that it is alone?
Sparkle rock
Flecks of starlight embedded in black
rough and crumbly, it leaves constellations on my hands.
I imagine ancient sisters
grinding it to use for adornment
because the desire for beauty is as old as Eve.
When this rock has...

Sidewalk Piano
Its days are truly numbered now
and for a moment I flare angry
that it’s been left flayed, denuded
Guts exposed as if for an autopsy or anatomy class
And I reflexively breathe “poor thing”
But then I see children
delighting in its erratic off-key plinks
Fingering its inner workings
and I suppose it could be worse…
It could have been left
rotting in a derelict house
unseen, unheard, unvalued
Surely once it filled a home
with its laughter and thunder
With hands that caressed it,
whether skilled or merely...

Farmers Market
I stroll the stalls
watch fellow wanderers
browse the bounty
voluptuous veggies
Socially conscious shoppers socialize
with passionate purveyors of handcrafted wares
Cheese and soap, cookies and sausage
I sit with a stranger
Samosa and small talk
of gray hair, summer and guitarists
We soak up the vibe
fragments of folk songs
Mr Bojangles transports me to childhood
I bathe in the notes
and just breathe
as I go Slip-slidin’ Away
When the moment passes we cordially part
purchases heavy, heart...

Strategy 3 - Group work
Find an ally
Get 'er done
Smack down the haters
Whip the laggards
Present a gem
Smile with the team
Get the grade
(You're welcome)
Bye now
(Thanks for nothing)
Nothing is wasted;
It's all educational

Missing
Slayed by a bear of very little brain -
his simple wisdom takes me by surprise.
A hole once sealed gapes open in my chest,
and all the world comes gushing out my eyes.
I didn't know that I still cared so much.
I thought that our goodbye had run its course.
The fear that maybe I had slipped your mind -
I didn't know t'would hit me with such force.
I know it's right to grasp for gratitude;
it's s'posed to fill an empty heart with light.
Perhaps if I knew you felt lucky too
then maybe my throat wouldn't feel so...

Strategy 2 - Bedtime
Stay awake
until
I simply can't
Thus avoiding
willing surrender of time
and acceptance of the death
of this day's possibilities
I hate endings

willing surrender of time
and acceptance of the death
