Pretending
I remember him just standing there.
Everyone said he looked good and I had been told countless times that night that I looked wonderful but I couldn’t help but notice that his smile never really reached his eyes, and his laughter sounded like a foreign language, and not the kind you’re in the middle of learning or the kind you’ve just forgotten, or the kind you can remember, no his laughter was like a language you can never comprehend no matter how many hours you spend trying to piece it together, believe me, I would know.
I remember standing in front of him for a lifetime...

awkward (for girls with bad timing)
It’s always awkward when you overestimate things.
The first time he thinks he loves you
He tells you so.
Says, you are more than anything he has ever known
That there is no one like you anywhere
You take him for granted
Pretend you already know.
The second time he thinks he loves you
He keeps it quiet
But you are still inclined to believe him
You can see it in his eyes
He thinks you are the moon, the sun, the stars and
He is just another awkward teenage boy that does stupid things
Like fall in love with girls who take him for...

She knows how this will end.
Broken shards and empty heartbeats.
She knows how it will begin
Late night text messages and early morning compliments
She knows it will hurt at the end.
Seeing the world through glassy eyes and blurred vision.
She knows she will convince herself
Of things she has no proof of
She knows there will be broken promises.
Hard mistakes and misconceptions
But she knows he is everything and
She knows she knows better!
But she is also human
So she hopes
And tries again.

I hope she kisses you on your first date.
I hope her smile gives you those familiar butterflies in your stomach
I hope you grow to love her laughter more than your favorite song
I hope you do not think of me.
I hope your parents love her the first time you bring her home to meet them
I hope she lets you talk about forevers and always
And when you reach for her, interlocking your fingers together perfectly, I hope you don’t notice who she’s texting under the table.
I hope she wears makeup nicknamed things like love and desire for your six-month...

Missing Pieces
Forgetting you is a funny kind of thing.
I think, it is because I don't know how.
I am a loaded rifle: locked and ready. I am still waiting for the right moment to shoot.
I am the heart of a lightbulb symphony, full of endless potential.
I am still searching for some kind of electricity
Waiting still for some connection.
But you, you are missed chances, you are unwrapped presents
You are empty voicemails, you are unanswered calls
You are untold secrets, you are all my missing pieces
You are secondhand smoke: I know you will never be...
I think, it is because I don't know how.

It takes a lot of courage to hold someone when they’re screaming.
Takes a lot of love to smile at someone when they’re angry.
Takes a certain amount of stupidity to make someone laugh when they’re crying.
There was once a girl who loved like a hurricane.
She breathed in tropical storms, she was all angles and sharp edges where she so desperately wanted curves, she left destruction in her wake, shouting truths to a town that had never seen her coming.
She met a boy who smiled like sunshowers.
He laughed like her favorite rock band, smoothed her...

Hurricanes
They are destruction. They are warfare and fear and danger all at once.
We are destruction. We are warfare and fear and danger and terror and love and hate, refusal and wanting all at the same time.
They remind you what is important.
I forget every reason why I hate you every time there is a chance you won't come back to me
I hate instead the chance that you won't return.
Hurricanes bring you back to me.
Spinning, drowning, falling, flailing, back to me,
And every stupid reason that you left disappears, hurricanes bring us back together

When I was thirteen, they showed me new beauty right before my eyes
Told me, I would redefine myself with new beauty too
If I really loved me
If I wanted someone to love me
If I ever wanted to be looked at as more than the girl with the pen and the paper
They decorated canvases of people we would never be and called them goals
Painted pictures of bodies we would never have and called them distant realities
Fell in love with images we could never have and called them necessary
They spun webs of lies and referred to them as personal identity
Wove...

Daisy
She stares up at me starry-eyed and asks me if it hurts when you die. I stare off and tell her no. She’s quieter than she’s ever been, and she doesn’t need my brutal honesty. I hug my knees to my chest and half-smile as she does the same.
Daisy is sick.
Not the kind of love-sick that most teenage girls feel, Daisy has a sick heart. Daisy does not know if this feeling will ever pass, she tells me through her silence and starry-eyes, she doesn’t know if she will ever get any better.
She doesn’t want to talk.
She says it is easier being alone but we are teenage...
