SELF POEM

Her
I once knew this woman
She felt untouchable
And so she was
She exuded strength and beauty
She walked with such confidence
Smiled from her soul
She spoke with passion
From her sweet, melodic voice
She could turn heads, that one
Just from entering the room
She never begged for attention
And didn't need approval
God's light shined on her
With her spirit, she was so in-tuned
And I swear we shall meet again,
Someday really soon.

Insecure
How did she get here
In this foreign place
In this lonely space
Unsure of herself
Questioning herself
Wondering if she was enough
Or if she cared too much
Better yet, if she was scared too much
Scared that she was in love alone
Scared of ending up alone
But she was already alone
Drowning in her own thoughts
Thinking the worst
Only made her feel worse
But she couldn't shut her mind up
And she couldn't talk about it
No one would get it
They just tried to feed her with clichés
Promises of "it'll be okay" ...

Lost
You were so confident
So complete
No one could tell you any different
Your beauty, your smile
You knew how to capture a heart
And then he came along
Something inside of you went wrong
Every waking moment
You were consumed with him
Thoughts, feelings
Sometimes fear
That you would wake up
And he wouldn't be near
You needed to feel his presence
His touch, his kiss
Only them were you whole within
He was your world
Your entire existence
The only way you could breathe
You would empty yourself
Just to fill him...

No one could tell you any different

Abuse
When his anger
Leads to harsh words
Verbal abuse, attacking your character
And then he gets physical
"But it was just a push"
Until he balls up his fist
Get out while you still can
You don't know his plan
And even when he promised
It would never happen again
You can't be sure
If this abuse will ever end.

Sometimes you just want more
More than just a hug
More than simple love
When what you're getting isn't enough
You want to feel more
And explaining what that means
Is like trying to describe a dream
Only you were there
Only you know what you need
You need him to just be
Be everything you didn't ask for
Everything you didn't know
Could even exist in a man
You need him to know
Without holding his hand
Walking him through every step
Showing him how you need to be held
Placing his hands on you, just right
You need him to...

Woman
I once believed that women were protected
Protected by men
Protected by our loved ones
Until you see the misuse
Until you experience the abuse
And you fall for the lies
The "baby give me one more try"
We don't love ourselves enough
Don't pretend you never had a moment of weakness
A moment where you forgot about yourself
Trying to love someone else
Most men catch on to this
But we believe their innocence
Because we want to believe in something
We want to know that "Someone in this world loves me"
Somewhere along the...

Trying to Let Go
As much as I'm trying to be strong
Something in me is still holding on
He still crosses my mind from time to time
I find myself wishing he was mine
I miss him
When I reminisce on the good times
But when I think about
The way my heart aches
I'm brought back to a bad place
More than anything
I just want to heal and forget him.

Ten to One
My obsession with him goes far beyond my own control
I cannot fathom the power that he still carries
What's worse, is he somehow knows he is
My greatest weakness that I cannot resist
I opened myself to him completely

You know, there's something to be said
When gay rights outweigh the black man's
Now let's be clear
I'm all for love winning
But don't forget the other battle we're in
Love is a beautiful thing
Sadly, love isn't prevailing
Not when it comes to the color of our skin
People are too easily distracted
Can't figure out which issue to handle
Churches being shot up
Burned to the ground
Shouldn't we at least be safe
In God's house
We can't walk down the street
With skittles in our hand
We can't breathe
We can't make a stand
We are...

Confession
I knew
I didn't want to admit it
But I knew
I deserved better than you
And my love surpassed
Everything you put me through
It scares me how much of me
I gave to you
How much I thought I needed you
But in reality
I fell in love with the man
I believed you could be.

It Was Her
She was the one that got away
But he actually pushed her away
She put her heart on the line
All he did was bleed her dry
She gave him too many times
To come back and keep trying
Too many nights she cried
And he couldn't even apologize
He knew he was her all
She was completely enthralled
He knew she gave everything
But it was never good enough for him
He forgot to show her what she meant
He didn't value the time they spent
He forgot to show her love and affection
Too busy giving others all his attention
He had no clue he pushed...
But he actually pushed her away

Every try to forgive someone
Who never apologized?
It hurts you to your core
That they don't see
The pain they have caused
Or how their actions are wrong
It would kill them to say
"I'm sorry -
For every tear you've cried
All the times I lied,
I apologize."
