I am not new to poetry but I think of myself as a new poet. With one book under my belt released in 2013 entitled Emotions of The Heart I am continuously trying to improve my writing. Critiques and advice are welcomed.

Rain
I stand in the rain in hopes that my tears blend so perfectly they go unnoticed. Water colors mix together to paint a picture that you can’t see with your eyes but only with your heart.
Face turned upward toward the heavens in hopes that you would recognize and come back and wipe them away with a brush of your gentle yet strong hands. I long for your embrace like a dry and thirsty land. Craving your closeness like a warm security blanket
The smell of your old spice that even now brings a smile when I least expect it pushing back the dark clouds filled with gallons of water ready...

Lyrical Life
Like a jazz musician you've made my heart and soul come back to life with a new sound. You treated my heart like a classic but expensive Bass that needed fine tuning. You gently changed the sound by pulling out the old strings of self-doubt, low self-esteem, timidity, bitterness, anger, hurt and self-hatred one at a time. Patiently, gently and purposely replacing them with joy, love, peace, confidence, self-love, boldness, and a strength that I never knew I had. Thougths of You
It’s after midnight and thoughts of you surround me like a thick forest. The more I think of you the thicker it gets.
A smile crosses my face as I recall the sound of your voice in my heart first then my ears. The deep sound of a grizzly bear hearty, strong and gentle all at once.
I softly hear you call my name and the familiar phrase of “come here doll let me talk to you for a moment”.
Like the automatic switch of the air conditioner coming on my tears begin to flow on cue as I realize the phrase will from now on will only be a memory of you.

Rose Colored Glasses
Rose colored glasses blind you from true reality.
Blind you from seeing the nonexistent freedom
Accepting the shackles placed on us willing
because we don't know who we are.
Shoes, houses, and cars are only things
objects to perpetuate the lie
that rose colored glasses are what's best us
The vanacular of your speech gives way to your ignorance because you don't know who you are or whose you are
Take off your rose colored glasses and see
Stand up and fight!
Not with your fist but with your mind and your actions and clearly see the plot of your enemy...
Blind you from seeing the nonexistent freedom

Frustration
Our souls and Spirits long for the justice that is due
So long we’ve wanted to believe that Injustice would not prevail
Why does looking at my skin cause such distress
The urge to belittle, degrade, abuse, and yes kill
Then it hit me
Like rocks from an avalanche
It's not the color of my skin but what’s beneath that makes you mad
Brilliant minds shaped from a long line of kings and queens
Original creators of creating all of what you see, not all credited to our ancestors
As it should be
We were beaten, whipped, hung and drowned just to...

She lay balled up on the floor
Tears continually streaming
The stench of his sweat lingers in the air
Glass broken,
Chair knocked over,
Lamp on floor
Hard to move
Eyes swollen
Lips bleeding
Body bruised
She remembers a yell that never reached her lips
Silence
Insides hurt
Tattered clothes stained in blood
Shame too much to bear
Innocence loss
Fear
Dirty
Sadness
Alone
She looks over as he lay dead
JUSTICE

I'm not sure how you feel but you have become a part of me...
It's been eight months since the first time you spoke to me and I look forward to everyday hearing from you...
Our times together have been few but quality to me...
When I'm with you I have all of your attention and all eyes are on me...
When you're not with me I miss you more than the sun when they're rain showers....

Rebirth of the Poplar Tree
Strange fruit once hung from poplar trees
Charred and rotting for the crows beneath
Shot in broad daylight
Handcuffed and beaten
Busted ear drums causing hemmoroging in the brain
Black and blue bruises cover the bodies
Busted lips and broken ribs
The fruit hasn't changed
The poplar tree has grown higher and roots deeper as injustice continues to feed the crows as they get fat on the strange fruit of the Poplar tree

Letting Go
You're like a piece of thread slowly coming undone like worn out material that's been used over, and over again
You lie to yourself and say all is well as if it shall be well
Sinking fast like cement cinder blocks your drowning fast right in the midst of those who care
Nobody has looked past your smile behind the light in your eyes to see the real you
No matter how hard you swim to the top you seem to get further, and further away and your arms are getting tired like spaghetti noodles that have boiled to long
So easy to let go and give in to the chaos that surrounds ...

My heart has begun to thaw under the care of your kindness and attention to me.
You caress my heart in such a way I could not say no.
My belief that I can love again and give of myself again is because of you.
Like rain that renews and brings back to life that which was almost dead, you have done that for me.
You have become my sunshine and my rain.
I long and thirst for you like a budding flower in bloom.
