POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
My poems are all over the map, mostly free verse. Influenced by everything I see, hear, and read. Don't know what I'm doing, but love doing it! Joined a couple of poetry groups & try to attend workshops to become a better writer. All just for fun!
Smiling Through Tears
Most of my friends were killed in combat with life:
Louis was slain by divorce
While Joe succumbed to his career,
Steve drowned in his family,
Chad was hanged by obligations
And Timothy was run over by deadlines and commitments.
David just couldn’t cope and overdosed on drugs
Larry was dragged along day after livelong day
Tattered and torn, left a mere shadow of himself
We all fight life
When we should learn to “just be”
Expectations are preconceived resentments
Stop focusing on the destination
Instead enjoy the journey...

Angels in Disguise
Just after the early morning's light
I stopped by a gas station convenience store
Where he was walking across the parking lot
Shaggy and scruffy as though
He was on the verge of being homeless
He entered the store just before me
Going one way and I another we parted
I got my daily allowance of chemicals
In both food and soda
We ended up by fate at the counter together
I looked him in the eye and said, "Good morning"
He asked about my uniform then started talking about people
He knew that had been in the military
He was not half...

Train to City Center
On the train to City Center
A young woman sitting alone
Engrossed in the book she was reading
Allowing me to examine her closely
To notice her flowered dress
Not too long to lose attention
But short enough that it catches my imagination
She still unaware as I follow her curves
Rich with possibility
Like the one that I love
And now she,
The one I haven’t discovered
And never will,
But I still study her face
Her eyes that say
I will tell you what I can
But there are some things
You never get to know

Daffodils
For years I planted bulbs and dreamed of their golden hints of spring
To see the first sprouts of God's daffodils and the happiness they bring
The bulbs in the cold ground lie dormant just waiting for the spring days ahead
So they can sprout to grow and multiply their beauty onto the canvas they spread
Nourishment from the soil washed in the rain and warmed by the sun and God's loving hand
Each year I wait in hopes that their beauty would temporarily change the look of the land
The yellow splashes of daffodils upon the grass canvas of green ...

Love Is
Love is better than
A poke in the eye
With a sharp stick
But it is still
Painful as hell
And lasts a lot longer
However, love does
Upon occasion
Make you smile
Where as, the sharp stick
Never does that
A poke in the eye
With a sharp stick
But it is still
Painful as hell
And lasts a lot longer
However, love does
Upon occasion
Make you smile
Where as, the sharp stick
Never does that

Dry Well
The poets are all unemployed,
The dreamers are all awake
And the prophets spit before speaking
Because no one wants to hear their words
The muses, the sirens and the ghosts
Have wondered afar off
A man on a lake lifts his oars
With each stroke pulls the dory further away
Inspiration lets a finger trail in the water
Making a rippled wake
But doesn’t look back
Content to move on
There are no more words to write
I watch them from the bank
They becoming smaller
Until finally disappearing in the distance
I have...

Coulrophobia
I had been to the circus
And I had been to the fair
I had even seen clowns on T.V.
They were always funny and entertaining
How could anyone be afraid of clowns?
I didn’t think Coulrophobia was real
But after having a few bad bosses
Those clowns have changed my mind
I saw them fumbling and bumbling
They told stupid jokes
They did a poor job of juggling things
Obviously promoted to a position
Above their competency
They were the jokes
Daily I was forced to watch them
Running around like clowns on fire

Yellow
Summer sunflowers
In a vase
Share the color
Of National Geographic
Magazines scattered
On the coffee table
The late afternoon
Sun streaming in
Through the den
Window turning the room
A shade of yellow
That hints of evening
As I sit on a pale lemon sofa
Watching the pallet
Of yellows invade
And crowd out
All of the blues
That I’ve been keeping
In a vase

Well Written is Well Fed
With nothing on my plate, but to sit and write poetry all day
I pray wisdom and wit or at least something profound to say
A life of leisure I’m sure to the masses and the herds
Though endless frustration when I can’t find the words
Elizabeth Browning said, “How do I love thee, let me count the ways”
I’ll count too writing my poems and struggling through countless days
The Bible says, “If a man does not work, neither let him eat”
Lord, let me labor over each line until this poem is complete
I will quote scripture and other poets...

In Close Proximity
Victoria Rose and Thalia are having tea
Under the Gooseberry tree out in the garden
The sun is not oppressive this early
Even in their long pink dresses
Festooned with ruffles and lace
Yet they keep their fuchsia parasols
In close proximity just in case
They enjoy one another’s company
With polite laughter and all decorum
But talk to the servant maids
In lofty tones befitting of their status
They are flirty with the young men
Yet never cross the line of propriety
They put on airs of haughty disregard
But in...

Island
You were the ocean new and inviting
I dove deep into your cool waters and swam
You were the turquoise sea beneath the summer sun
I relaxed beside you with beaded sweat, bronzing my skin
You were the ocean that shimmered aquamarine
I sat and watched your tide rise and fall
You were the enchanted sea
I was hypnotized by the rhythm of your waves
You were the gulf whose boundaries I could not see
I walked along your beaches holding hands
You were the orange-capped waves while the sun was setting
I had grown tired of my vacation, ready to pack...

The Greener Pastures of Cattle Heaven
Early one morning on the way to work in the cool of the fall
I came upon an amazing sight, but couldn’t believe what I saw
Heavenly clouds in a pasture hovering close to the ground
And in the morning fog cattle grazing in the heaven they’d found
As fences go they had finally reached the other side
And nothing could be greener than where they now abide
Like angels without halos each one well fed without care or worry
Now spiritual Israel grazing in Zion’s pasture with no need for hurry
They had made it to their final...
