POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Humorist and storyteller, with a dash of lyrical loveliness and an occasional deep thought.
The Hyman Guy
Back when I felt I owed an answer,
to inquires of why I'd never married
I'd jokingly blame it on the last names of my exes.
I'd share a couple of the multi-syllabic clunkers,
and the one that always got the laugh: Hyman.
It's bad, but not the worst ever.
I was in a children's theater production with a girl whose last name was Dick.
I had a manicurist with the surname Titman
and in second grade
I kicked the biggest boy in the class
- impressively hard I might add -
His last name was Dickhouse.
No Spellcheck, not...

Mint
I won't be coy,
this isn't a hint,
currently all I grow is mint.
In the inner city,
gardens aren't pretty,
my neighbors don't like plants, just weed.
I want much more,
lush gardens by the score!
But fierce summer heat will always impede.
My sister grows a bounty on her porch,
but Oregon's heat isn't the Phoenix blowtorch.
Still, here in this desert apartment I know.
there are plenty more herbs I could currently grow.
like basil, rosemary, chives, cilantro
And do that I must,
if you know what I mean ...

Closing Time
Dear DUP Poets,
I have a weird problem.
The urgency of this problem
Is just above the moderate mental thrum
of wondering when I'll hang a framed mirror I bought six weeks ago
and just below
deciding whether or not to join Noom
It's certainly a first world problem:
I can't decide on a closing for my personal emails and messages.
Really.
That's it.
Lately I've settled for
Cheers, Wendy
like I'm lifting a pint to you in an Irish pub, mate!
A nice thought.
But it doesn't quite fit. ...

Dear Monsoon
Dear Monsoon,
You were due mid June
Now well into July,
this is no lie:
we need you.
Please come soon.
Respectfully,
Phoenix

Flying Unicorn on the Beach
She needed time off this summer
School year had been a bummer
She craved the sea and the sand
Time to read
Time to swim
and though chances were slim
maybe even find a man
She made a few forays
into welcoming soirees
trying to keep her mind open
the evenings were lovely and misty
but the men looked like Chris Christie
she soon tired of wishing and hopin'
On her balcony she'd sigh
and sometimes even cry
Not a soul heard her heart moan
but soon a vision appeared
that snorted and reared
she knew...

Hey, Guy At the Coast
Hey older guy at the coast
near San Simeon
As you were watching molting elephant seals
throw sand on themselves with their flippers,
As you marveled at them propelling their multi-ton bodies,
across expanses of sand
As you listened to their blorpy,
bad plumbing sounds
amidst the primordial lull of the Pacific Ocean,
you heard another sound.
You heard my elderly mother
say she felt a bit dizzy
You saw her partner
hold her steady
You took in her daughter
rushing to her other side

The Eeks of the World
For five weeks
for several summers
I attended a sleepaway camp in North Carolina,
near my grandparents' vacation home
I think it was listed as a Christian camp
There was another Jewish girl once
I sang Dear Lord Jesus
along with everyone else
No big whoop
The archery counselor's nickname was Eek
She was an older woman
with the type of shortly curled,
pubic looking perm
that made me wonder how much worse her untreated hair could have been
She seemed to dislike me
Or at least my technique
I was a...

Human Folly (Ways to Die)
Walk backwards off a cliff while taking a totally great selfie
Cuddle a baby bear in the woods
Daydream during your skydiving lesson
Don't stop overnight on a road trip
Dash across a busy street
Eat nothing but McDonald's for a year
Flip off an American driver
Win at any cost
Replace your water intake with Mountain Dew and Red Bull
Perform a Tik Tok challenge to impress your friends
Send a text on the highway so your wife knows you'll be late
Get that downed power line out of the way
Do something that starts with...

In the City
In the city
the night sky
if you even bother to look at it
has no Milky Way
Five hundred billion neighbors
murdered by electricity
Or home
in the dark
It makes no difference
You're alone.
In the city
when,
or if, you hear a drumbeat
and you bother to listen
you hear your own heartbeat
You hear the heartbeat of your tribe,
joining your own
all drumming together
in ritual communication
perhaps celebration
Diaphanously aware,
you decide to join a drumming...

The Science Teacher
The science teacher
started to like me around March
I thought it might have been my meatballs
Throw frozen ones in a crockpot with barbeque sauce
Heat on high until nice and hot
Everyone at the potluck will think you're a genius
the science teacher was extra complimentary
I think he ate more of them than he should have
The science teacher has five snakes in his studio apartment
His toe exploded once
Diabetes
Also makes him pee every two hours at night
He hasn't seen his grown children in three years
This one's in an almost...

He Doesn't Want GPS
He doesn't want GPS
Feels he can navigate fine on his own
Even though he frequently misses turns
and doesn't remember to use Maps on his phone
when driving somewhere new
Lack of intelligence isn't the problem
He's well educated
Well spoken
Respectable trajectory
in his professional career
He doesn't want GPS
even though late one night
on his drive from Tucson back to Phoenix
near to when he should have been home
he found he'd gone in the wrong direction
and was close to the border of New...
