Undress (Pint-Sized Poem #53)
Undress me
until I am nothing more
than a jewelry collection
and a pair of socks

than a jewelry collection
and a pair of socks

Breaking the Habit (Pint-Sized Poem #52)
I had an obsession
with naming my poems
after songs
I wish I had written.
with naming my poems
after songs
I wish I had written.

This book is made of the words
I wanted to say to my father

Purge (Pint-Sized Poem #50)
I am stripping
away the dead skin
like the snake
I pretend I am
away the dead skin
like the snake
I pretend I am

My Promise
She told me:
“One day you won’t need me,
you won’t want me around.
You will want to be with friends.”
I said:
“No, Mommy— You’re my best friend.”
So for the rest of my life
I was spent—
Trying
Clinging
Kicking
Screaming
Holding on to that promise I made.
When Daddy trashed the house.
I wiped her tears and held her face.
When we had to run away;
I always went with her, never tried to stay.
I was her keychain attached at the hip-- The backpack.

Say Goodbye
Goodbye to bike rides.
And books on rainy days.
Groceries on Saturday mornings.
Walking Pumpkin through the rain.
Befriending stray cats
Counting cars as they pass
Sleepovers in the basement
Late nights with insomnia
Middle school days
Listening to baseball on the radio
Cruel neighborhood kids stealing tulips
Get off the grass
Watch the skinny cat lay in the sun.
The wooden swing
Cracked the back board
Standing on it.
Goodbye to the fort
And the guy in the woods
Was he a stalker or not?...

Begin Again
Can we meet again?
Make me laugh like you did.
Notice me in a sea of hundreds.
Can we go back to the start?
When we were just two kids.
Playing games & having fun.
Can we go back?
To the fight and the tears.
Me walking into the street.
Can you take me to that place again?
Where I felt safe in your arms.
And someday everything would be okay.
Take me back.
To the moment we fell.
To the first kiss.
When you mended me after I broke.
Let’s go back.

"Ride or Die"
I will never be sane.
You love me this way.
I lost myself in the rain.
The storms made me this way.
I will never be okay.
You love me this way.
I will never be okay.
You love me when I'm insane.
- v.b.

Poem (Pint-Sized Poem #48)
Where were you, when I had writer's block?
When my creativity was off?
When I couldn't think?
When I couldn't talk?
Where were you, when I had writer's block?

Today (Pint-Sized Poem #47)
Right now--
This moment--
It's all clear.
I have seen the light.
(today)
I feel alive.
This moment--
It's all clear.
I have seen the light.
(today)
I feel alive.
