BEHIND YOUR EYES
Behind your eyes
is the place
you can always see
your mother’s face.
When the time comes
for a mother to die
she keeps watch over
her children from the sky.
If you are a child
with a mother not here
take a few moments
to feel her presence near.
Close your eyes,
see her face,
feel her arms
warmly embrace
you and know,
a mother’s love
can never go,
it’s inside you,
lives in your heart.
So a mother and child
never truly part.

TAKE NO NOTICE
It was 250 years ago
Cook arrived at Botany Bay,
thanks to Covid-19 no one
celebrated the day.
No stupid ceremonial
event held at La Perouse
instead, the fight continues
to prevent a cruise
boat terminal
being built,
adding to the
contaminated silt,
in a place already
degraded, by those
who continue to
disregard the invaded.

A SENSE OF PLACE
Walking together sharing this land,
helping other people to understand
the life and culture of traditional times,
I research information, turn it into rhymes.
I’m trying hard
to bridge the gap,
gather the data
for a new map.
There’s such a need
for education,
understanding may bring
reconciliation.
For knowledge is power
to be cherished with care,
respect must be shown
some things we won’t share.
So many energies can
be contained in one space,
it’s important to tap into
this sense of...

Climbing the pass
the scent of freshly
burnt brake pads
mingles with the
coastal breeze.
Walking into the
glassed faces of
controlled yet
rapid descent.
The deceleration
of the unending
parade of travellers
echoes across the valley.

DEPTHS OF COMPREHENSION
Understanding on other
levels than the surface,
the superficial.
Ignoring, avoiding
the blocks, barriers,
plunging into the
outgoing tide of
emotion.
Being submerged in
a sea of bottomless
depth, free to probe.
The surface becomes known,
common depths are
investigated, only to the
varying extents, demanded
upon by needs, until
out of the blue,
taken below,
drawn down
to a totally different
perspective.
New insight changes,
effects all previous
perception. ...

when I look into your eyes
that touches me
deep in my soul.

IT'S UP TO YOU
Stop and look
life's like a book
waiting for you to read,
so many words
need to be heard
if you ever hope to succeed.

absorb what it has to say,
it's up to you

each and every day.

SURRENDER
You hear the words,
but do you listen?
You see the signs,
but do you read?
You know the way,
but still you wander.
You get your wants,
forget your needs.
Then in the early morning lightness
when you wake still half asleep,
unwanted thoughts bombard your mind,
you try to decide which ones to keep.
You hear the stillness
in the silence.
You taste the freshness
in the air.
You close your eyes,
go back to dream time,
you know the answer's
there somewhere.
Then...

BELONGING TO THIS SPACE
Going back in time, to Warrane, Sydney Cove,
standing with the Eora watching ships unload,
seeing the white man again stake claim,
to something not his, by changing its name.
Within a few days it was obvious to see,
Terra Nullius was false, the land wasn't free.
Still Phillip had plans, a type of assimilation,
an exchange of learning, to be the foundation.
So he made Tubowgule the point of Bennelong,
no longer was heard the ceremonial song
of the water's edge, Smallpox took hold,
spreading through tribes like the common cold. ...

NECESSARY GRAMMAR
Find it when it appears,
when eyes become ears,
words on a page try to
engage your mind in
a way not expected.
Ready for rhyme
to be detected and
rhythm to flow
telling your brain
you know that
this is a poem,
so let your mind
roam as it journeys
along to be stopped
by necessary grammar.

Slowly the lingering went
under the darkening shade,
gently touching the brightly
glowing signposts, opening,
enveloping the quietness,
