POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I write poetry so dark feelings find their voice. Sometimes the result is pleasing, dark, ugly, or humorous. Writing is a good way to get the crap out.
Somethig 'Bout a Thick Girl
Something 'bout a thick girl
Gets me every time.
That extra in the package
Leaves me feeling fine.
Gets me every time.
That extra in the package
Leaves me feeling fine.

Following Orders
My grandfather’s voice echoed in my ears, “A penny for your thoughts.” Yes, I desperately wanted to read her mind before her parting. As a soldier, I was trained to take down high-stakes targets. I wasn’t sure how the daughter of a governor would further our undefined purpose but I would do my duty. Implied in every order received was the bargain, the life of your enemy or your life. If I failed, the cost would be great. I would follow orders.
From being to nonbeing seems like such a great leap to take in one passing second yet that was what her future held. She would leave so...

Snow Angels
Glissading naked down a snowbank near our cabin,
we tumble together, fully aware of our brokenness.
Rising slowly from the snow we know we’ll be sore tomorrow.
Then we laugh at our snow angels in hot in anticipation of their joining.

Still, We Remember
You’ve now found
the last great love of your life.
I guess I wish you all the best.
Were we mere children when we first loved?
Our lives later became books
filled with stories of love and laughter
mixed with sorrow.
I’m thankful we wrote our preface together.
What a prologue it was!
The breasts I first kissed went on to
nourish three children.
Those same breasts nursed the
lust of a few men you
accepted as worthy.
Our first kiss was beautiful and soft.
Those same lips that tasted the...

Let Us Be Lavish in Our Sins
Let us be lavish
in our sins,
not condemned to
the tortured lives
of cowering saints
lost to history.
Let us accept the
sanctity of flesh and
worship with abandon,
melting into one another
as we embrace the
certainty of our demise.
My heart pounds
at the sight of your
beauty spread across
these borrowed linens
that will soon bear witness to
our lovely transgressions.

Parting Flames
Will we one day be
consumed by the desires
that live within us?
If so, may we
leave light in the
fierceness of our
parting flames.

A Ukrainian Girl
I was walking home from the house where I did laundry. The kind Russian lady let me borrow books from her library as long as her officer husband didn’t find out. It was close to curfew in Odessa and I knew this would arouse suspicion. Worse yet, my mother would be angry.
At the corner before my street, a soldier appeared. He had a young and fearful face. My hoodie was pulled over me and I continued toward my street thinking he’d let a young girl pass or inform his superior.
It was a clean stab into my ribs. His rifle came up from his side so quickly. I only saw...

Hospital Conversation
Two nurses sat in the commissary next to my table.
"I wish you could have been there. It was such a tender and sad moment," said the taller nurse with shiny gray hair pulled back in a bun.
"Is this the patient we lost on the fourth floor?", the younger nurse said softly.
"Yes. So young. She should have lived at least to my age or beyond. But, her lover's grief was beautiful. She was loved."
That was all I heard, but I imagined what the older nurse must have seen and what the young lady's lover must have felt. I asked him to speak to me as I sat...
