I want to know.....is it ok/what is the etiquette to have 2 semi-colons within the same sentence? doesn't feel right.

Hi, nomoth! I'll be getting to the proper use in Part Two!  I wanted to make sure everyone understood what a semicolon was first, a bridge with a sign on it that says, "Wait! Because you've read the previous clause, there's more!"

Thank you for your support! Imma let this ride a bit longer to see if participants ( or anyone ) who haven't been online want to contribute, then I'll move on!

My Teaser for You

Can I use multiple semicolons in the same sentence as long as they follow the rules for using semicolons?

Nicely done , throughout this thread , Ahavati ;

However , to bring to light a "possible" language phrasing which could ,
if not corrected , or addressed , bring up an interesting situation ;

It appears , as you have phrased the statement , the semicolon has a
life , and intelligence , and ability to move of it's own accord , and I truly
would question it's ability to move on it's own ;

Your sentence read :

"a semicolon inserted into the definition of war crimes"

I have some reason to believe you meant :

"a semicolon was inserted into the definition of war crimes"

Otherwise it gives the semicolon an intelligence of it's own ,
as well an ability to seemingly creep in , and insert itself ,
purposefully into the sentence...

This action of the semicolon , has me questioning it's ability
to do so ,  on one level , and secondly , would make me wary
enough to look over my shoulder to espy any such being at
whim , creeping up to insert itself into my phraseology...

Please forgive my insertion of a statement into this matter ,
yet I must admit , i now have suspicions regarding it's abilities...

Thank you for your time...

Oh no! Make no mistake! It's a sneaky little fucker!  Just like the inadvertent apostrophe in your it's! It's ( no pun intended ) subliminal! See? Even the very thought made you nervous despite it being playful!

Personification is fun, Blackwolf! Try it sometime!  But, remember, just like the movies, it's only personification.

Thank you for the "it's" catch...

And I do partake of the art of personification ,
more often than you might think , or observe...

However , I stand with my statement...

I do not believe the semicolon is sentient enough
to insert itself into a statement , or phrasing...

Personal observation , and diagnosis , of course...

Yet , by all means , proceed...perhaps you shall
convince me...;)

The thought never crossed my mind, Blackwolf.

Thank you, Sky. I am happy you're enjoying it, and that it's helping you some.  All one needs to do is understand a thing to know how it properly works.  Then you can break the hell out of the rules in confidence.  I really hate that some writers are too intimidated to push punctuation because they don't understand it. I want everyone to understand it so they can rule it!

I'll give it another day or so to make sure no one else wants to chime in before moving on.  xo

I am so happy you posted that, Tallen!  We'll take a little detour here to a very sad but interesting and worthy-of-sharing story behind the semicolon tattoo.

Amy Bleuel founded Project Semicolon after a childhood of being bullied, abused, and raped.  Additionally, her father committed suicide when she was only 18.  Understanding the meaning behind the symbol ( as we have previously discussed in this workshop ), she started Project Semicolon to raise awareness of mental health problems.

Unfortunately, Amy passed away in 2017 due to her own battle with depression; however, her legacy continues to inspire thousands fighting the same battle.  Because no one's story is over;

We'll honor Amy's legacy today, then move onto the correct use of the semicolon tomorrow. <3
