Charge packs and plug ins seem to be somewhat a replacement for battery. Take the Nintendo 3DS's charge cradle compared to the original Gameboy's battery section for batteries.

I think it can have a huge effect on a child. Of course each case is different, and it really depends on the parents/guardian if it's a good impact or a bad one.

I would choose the late Victorian era for the art and lessons in behaviour, or the Industrial era for the energy and change, or the Medieval era possibly First Crusade for righteousness and to harden myself up in blood and fury. Or last week to read up on those things.
