That was ungodly. I've never seen a mushroom like that before. But they did say it was at an armory?

My heart aches for the lost, trapped, and injured lives.

Apparently it was where they were storing weapons ,
however , I grasped something about them having
been confiscated during previous battles...

I could have misunderstood...still watching different reports...

They have absolutely no idea how many dead or injured yet...

Never seen anything like that. Period.

I find it hard to believe it could be an accident, but I guess time will tell.

Guess we wait for more news tonight , but yeah ,
that was a huge blast , and they can only confirm
a small number of dead , because many are under rubble...

I saw a few more videos , and it is just crazy , how large the blast was...

Yeah, I was rather surprised that the major networks were continuing with regular broadcasting.

Yeah , we have a few different versions already...mostly the same , yet some differences...

Thanks , Slipalong...much appreciated

( "Diab added that the warehouse had been storing an estimated 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, according to an account by President Michel Aoun." )

Yeah...just a little combustible material...sheesh

..................................................................................................................................

Okay , *this* is strange...look at the tonnage of sodium nitrate...

Now look at this statement :

"The minister said earlier today that at
least 2,750 had been injured in the explosion."

Big yes, but not big in the scale of other cock-ups. Ammonium nitrate related incidents have happened before.

I think the chemical explosion in China a couple of years ago was much larger, and the video of that, as well as how the fire-fighting effort was part of the reason for the rapid energy release, are worth a watch/read.

Actually , unless I am reading wrong , it does not seem you are correct...

Could we check this ?

Chinese explosion :  The more powerful explosion was estimated at 336 tons TNT equivalent

Beirut explosion : The explosion generated a shock-wave equivalent to approximately 1.29 kilotons of TNT

Am I missing something ?

Further : "that was felt more than 240 kilometers (150 mi) away."

If those numbers are correct it was indeed a very Big Bang!

(Am a fan of big bangs, under controlled conditions....horrifying to see what is probably an entirely preventable accident like this)

The deadly explosion that devastated Beirut appears to have been far more powerful than the 'Mother of All Bombs'

The governor of Beirut compared Tuesday's horrific explosion to the atomic bombs that devastated the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

"In my life, I haven't seen destruction on this scale," he said.

I know it was nothing like I had ever seen before. Bless those families who have lost loved ones.

According to what I researched , a *kiloton* is :

"a unit of explosive power equivalent to 1,000 tons of TNT"

Therefore far larger than :

Weapons experts told Insider they estimated the explosive yield of the deadly blast to be several hundred tons of TNT equivalent, making it at least a couple of orders of magnitude more powerful than the so-called "Mother of All Bombs.

So something does not make sense to me...

Can the explosive yield  of a blast involving several hundred tons of TNT produce a
shock wave of 1.29 kilotons ?
