Thanks, BW.

Wow @ Police Officer's disciplinary records being public like any other public employee now. Reform in the right direction. And I LOVE the false reporting too. That video was ridiculous and I am SO happy she was fired.

Exclusive: nearly 600 US health workers died of Covid-19 – and the toll is rising

The Guardian and KHN release new figures showing the harsh toll that the pandemic is taking on the frontline health workers

Nearly 600 frontline healthcare workers have died of Covid-19, according to Lost on the Frontline, a project launched by the Guardian and Kaiser Health News (KHN) that aims to count, verify and memorialize and every healthcare worker who dies during the pandemic.

The tally includes doctors, nurses and paramedics, as well as crucial healthcare support staff such as hospital janitors, administrators and nursing home workers, who have put their own lives at risk during the pandemic to help care for others. And the number of Frontline workers lost due to exposure to the Flu every year?

New Zealand 🇳🇿

The government has announced a $175 million package to boost the arts and creative sector in the wake of Covid-19.

Speaking in Napier at midday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a jobseekers programme and four new funds to help the arts and music sector.

"The arts and music sectors have been decimated by Covid-19," Ardern said in a statement.

"Treasury forecasts suggests that without government intervention, the cultural sector will be hit roughly twice as hard as the rest of the economy, and 11,000 jobs could be lost within a 12-month period."

The Careers Support for Creative Jobseekers programme will be given $7.9m of the total and build on the Pathways to Arts and Cultural Employment (PACE) programme.

The government expects it could help up to 2000 people in creative jobs over four years.

Ardern said the intiatives would help provide more opportunities for those in the sector to keep earning an income and rebuild their careers.

"We know many of our creatives get income from multiple sources and it is an ongoing challenge to piece together the gigs and commissions to earn a livelihood."

A doctor and legislator. . . because black people do not know how to wash their hands like white folk do.  Some people don't think before speaking either, like particular white folk. . .

Sigh.

N.C. Health Secretary Warns Of Surge In Cases, Possible Return Of Stay-At-Home Orders

The second phase of reopening, which began May 22, lifted the state's stay-at-home order and allowed certain businesses to open back up or expand operations in a limited capacity. But one day after the start of phase two, North Carolina reported its largest single-day spike since the start of the pandemic.

Nearly three weeks later, North Carolina is again seeing an increase of COVID-19 cases, according to state data, and currently has more people hospitalized for the disease than at any point since the start of the outbreak. In all, the state has had more than 38,000 confirmed cases and 1,000 deaths.

I don't think that's gonna happen unless our hospitals are over-capacity for treating.  This virus is very real, and I think the mentality for a majority is that it is what it is and whoever dies, dies, and it should not be at the expense of everyone else. Until, their own family is affected, that is. Then it's a different story, as we have seen by many confessions of former disbelievers who contracted the disease and almost died themselves.

What the archaeological record reveals about epidemics throughout history – and the human response to them

The previous pandemics to which people often compare COVID-19 – the influenza pandemic of 1918, the Black Death bubonic plague (1342-1353), the Justinian plague (541-542) – don’t seem that long ago to archaeologists. We’re used to thinking about people who lived many centuries or even millennia ago. Evidence found directly on skeletons shows that infectious diseases have been with us since our beginnings as a species.

Bioarchaeologists like us analyze skeletons to reveal more about how infectious diseases originated and spread in ancient times.
