It's always instructive to look at the lives of people whose quotes are, shall we say, distinctive in a particular way.
Thomas Otway (1652-1685), died in poverty at the age of 33. He was a playwright and dramatist of shortlived success - (his plays had a common theme of love tragedies, and three of them (one based on Romeo & Juliet) were very successful).
He failed as an actor due to stage-fright. He fell in love with a women who only flirted with him, because she did not want to lose her wealthy lover, the 2nd Earl of Rochester.
He then got a commission to join the army and was stationed in Holland until 1679 when the troops were disbanded and he was left to make his way home to England, arriving starving and in rags.
No-one is exactly sure how he died, but rumour has it he was begging on the streets of London, when someone recognised him as a well-known playwright and gave him a guinea - with which he rushed to a bakery and being so hungry he scoffed down the bread too quickly and he choked to death on it.
Not a happy life, one devoid of female companionship, and outright rejected on occasion too - and hence maybe explains his particular take on women.

He did not care if she was heartless, vicious and vulgar, stupid and grasping, he loved her. He would rather have misery with one than happiness with the other.-W. Somerset Maugham

I love this writer.
