This book - is amazing. It's the Spoon River Anthology of the ubiquitous Waffle House.

Shane is a personal friend of mine and the founder of activist/outreach art collective Guerilla Poets ( branches in the US and UK ). I remember photographing and videoing her performance many times at a local book shop when she was just starting out. I'll be passing those onto my grandson - because, let me tell you something, folks - she's gonna make it big.

Driving Back
Spawn of night-
unfold 10 stems of your fingers,
the bones as bridges.
Stretch me across the distance.
I have left craters in myself
to weep shortcomings.
I want to be there.
Where the blush of dawn
is blue as baby's breath.
Do not cast a cape for a casket.
Not tonight,
instead - open wide.
Spread like the waitress's pale smile
that fluttered like thunder
when she passed my seat.
Young,
and clawing
in her festering nest
that she
did
not
build
