Dadaist poems

poet Anonymous

Dadaism was an art movement which peaked during and after World War I. To quote The Language of Art Knowledge by Dona Budd, "Dada was born out of negative reaction to the horrors of World War I. This international movement was begun by a group of artists and poets associated with the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich. Dada rejected reason and logic, prizing nonsense, irrationality and intuition. The name 'Dada' was reputedly arrived at during a meeting of the group when a paper knife stuck into a French-German dictionary happened to point to 'dada', a French word for 'hobbyhorse'."
Tristan Tzara (1896 - 1963) was an avant-garde poet and performance artist. He wrote these instructions for making dadaist poems:

To Make A Dadaist Poem

Take a newspaper.
Take some scissors.
Choose from this paper an article the length you want to make your poem.
Cut out the article.
Next carefully cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them all in a bag.
Shake gently.
Next take out each cutting one after the other.
Copy conscientiously in the order in which they left the bag.
The poem will resemble you.
And there you are - an infinitely original author of charming sensibility, even though unappreciated by the vulgar herd.

***

Write a dadaist poem following the instructions above.

This is interesting. Just so I understand, we copy the words regardless if they make sense together? So if I pull out "the" three times, I type that, three times?

[font=Verdana]Yes. I think if your poem makes perfect sense, you should be worried

[font=Verdana]Those sites are fine by me. I guess they follow Tzara's rules, just in a less literal sense. Thanks for introducing me to them! Now I don't have to mangle my dad's paper...

Yes, the instructions don't specify how the lines
should be formatted, so both generators decide to
do that for you. Only, to my mind, they get a bit
carried away. That's why I took out all the extra
line breaks when I did mine.

I looked around and found a good generator that
lets you specify line length and just gives it to
you straight:

http://bensonofjohn.co.uk/poetry/tools/dada.php

I put this Jewelry description into the above generator:

Black Mother of Pearl Sterling Silver Pendant
A delicate waterfall of silver cascades down to the green pool of a stone known as black mother of pearl.
When you wear this pendant, you’ll often be asked what the stone is. Its surface flashes with a lovely green irridescence that bears a hint of pink rainbows in it.

A stone of new beginnings and an open heart.

 Sterling silver wire setting.

I asked it for a 6 word line, and got this:

that pool of of is setting
flashes mother bears a stone and
a green a asked down its
pink new the of of with
silver what as this heart stone
when the pendant surface pearl pearl
you pendant wear rainbows known stone
of open hint sterling sterling wire
beginnings a lovely mother be you
it often cascades in silver to
black of an green ll black
waterfall irridescence delicate silver a

Which I couldn't resist cheating to make:

a pool of setting flashes
as my mother bears a stone
a green splashed down to pink
of newest silver, silver black
as pink bears down to stone her pearl
this pendant surface, surface pearl
this pearl of you, your pendant pearl
it wears its rainbow's known in stone
of open hint of sterling wire
of your beginnings lovely mother
please be you that cascades into new
a silver black green black again
a waterfall of iridescence delicate
a pool of setting flashes
as my mother bears a stone
