Do you have formal education related to poetry, and do you think an online class is worth a monetary investment?

Yes to both.  Knowledge is an investment that always returns in yields one can't imagine.

Nope and Yep. I'm all for learning that doesn't involve cramming yourself in an actual room with actual people!

Nope and never to both.

If it’s not something you feel in your gut, in the immortal words of Bukowski, don’t try. No amount of paperwork will change that.

Formal Education ... a couple of MOOCS,

1) https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/how-to-make-a-poem - not so good.  I think that this is aimed at the absolute beginner; I found the course to be pedestrian.

2) https://www.coursera.org/learn/poetry-workshop Sharpened Visions - Brilliant, would recommend it to all at any level of background and experience.  There were lots of useful exercises (which continue to be useful) and lots of food for thought.  It fitted in well with where I was at the time and challenged my thinking about poetry.  Please do it and report back to us.

I didn't pay for either of these courses.  I would be interested in taking my learning further but I don't know enough to assess whether or not an online course would be worth the payment.  (I'm intently watching this thread to see what others say, thanks for starting it).  I'm currently looking out for local workshops but as yet I haven't had much luck.  I live in a region of academic snobs.  Yes, really.

That said, I'd love to quit my job and enroll in this course https://www.sfu.ca/continuing-studies/courses/cpw/the-poems-intention.html but ...

Is there a formal education class for heart and soul ?

No , there is not , if one speaks truth...

Therefore anything claiming to teach you poetry , is
full of bullshit , as far as I am concerned...;)

They may be able to teach you certain methods of
language arrangement , or rhyme schemes , or of
certain ways people invented , and called them the
rules of poetry...

But that is NOT poetry...that is entropy , whereas
pure poetry is phase entanglement of mind and heart...

Look , and feel within , and write as you will...

All else is invented by someone who wants to place
themselves on a pedestal , and make money , or think
they will achieve fame , or prestige , by espousing certain
methods and rules , and calling it "poetry"...

That is the downfall of the Art !

Some people do write as they will, but unfortunately they are poor communicators. And that's where most everything written goes to hell.

So, a class that teaches how to avoid putting your readers to sleep with excess wording and irrelevant information is a good class to take. And if your poetry is full of distractions that cause your readers to lose interest and explore the expired contents of their refrigerators midway through, the same.

However, Javalini is already great writer in my opinion. I don't foresee him needing a course on how to write more efficiently.

I can agree with most of your reply , and statement , Ahavati ;

Yet :
"And if your poetry is full of distractions that cause your readers to lose
interest and explore the expired contents of their refrigerators midway
through, the same."

Then *that* does not qualify as *poetry* in my mind , because it is not
engaging soul and heart...just the way I see it...;)
