Scratch the Scars

Mementos in 3D
…The marks are now barely noticeable,
Where the wounds and hurt once ran deep,
Like phantom limbs they carry a memory,
They tell story that could make anyone weep.
But those scars are not only reminders,
They’re also lessons that I learned to keep,
To value myself and understand true worth,
The errors I try to make sure I won’t repeat.
These souvenirs of wars gauged and waged,
Many of them lost at a cost too grave to count,
They linger on like ghosts of a forgotten time,
Beaten and broken from the deadly account.
Then there are times when I scratch the old scars,
Like mementos carrying me down memory lane,
I remember the person I was and used to be,
Swearing to myself I will never be the same.
