Poetry Contest

For this competition I’d like you to write an Elegy poem describing your grief for a lost object.
We’ve all experienced the loss of a loved one.  But have you, like me, ever grieved over a lost inanimate object, like a car or a special toy?  I recently lost a stockman’s cane (also known as a shepherd’s hook) that I had since the age of eight. So for this competition I’d like you to write an Elegy poem describing your grief for a lost object. For clarification, for those of you who don’t know, an Elegy is a sad and thoughtful poem lamenting the death of a person.  But for this competition, I’m asking you to write your Elegy about an object instead of a person.

Dirty, Stripped and Desolate

You were my longest relationship
Sixteen years through thick and thin
But the distance, the wear and tear
Had taken a toll on your skin

I had so many memories with you
You took me to so many different places
You made my mobility possible
Even though I never took you to the races

And then those bastards stole you
Stripped you and took so much away
And when I finally found you again
You were a mess on that hot day

In the end you were draining my pockets
It was best for my financial survival
I’m sorry but you were just beyond repair
And it saddened me to sign over the title

I always knew the day would finally come
But I didn’t know it would be that hard
Seeing you dirty, stripped and desolate
When I said goodbye at the wrecking yard

Tanya

Thread spool to spool in red and black
The tension has to be just right
Once fitted I was ready to go
Just awaiting creative inspiration
A full bottle of correction fluid
Almost erases those mistakes
I gave you a woman’s name
Tanya; exotic and appropriate
Your sleek black glossed bodywork
Beautiful curves; very art deco
You held the keys to my heart
To my mind and my creativity
Your action well oiled and easy
Apart from that lazy “I” and “Q”
Spent many a late night with you
Creating masterpieces in the dark
A green onyx and brass desk lamp
To light our way to the blank pages
I’d stroke your slender arm and sigh
as you rang your carriage return
Not sure where you went
Now replaced by electronic nonsense
It’s just not the same my dear
I miss you like I miss my pencil
And dream of you often
As a loyal, reliable friend
Very few remember the typewriter
Especially the way I do
Sweet dreams Tanya
Wherever you are

Red Shoes

working evenings at the coffee house
washing dishes to earn my keep
scrubbing dirt from the tiled floors
all for a stipend and place to sleep

mistress mine visited often
looked at us with kind eyes
paid our wages to the cents
fed us well once a month

my fifteenth birthday was a good day
I was healthy and had a dollar
in my little black handbag
adorned with the face of Donny Osmond

My mistress gave me her red shoes
with many a wear left in in
I wore  them proudly for a day
the three inch heels were painful

a friend borrowed it for a date
and wore it better than me
she had fun on the dance floor
dancing around with my red shoes

on the way home a dog got free
from the owners fence
chased her right to the door
she ran fast without my shoes

up and down the lane next day
we looked diligently for my red shoes
but never did we find them
and they remained lost up to this day

o' red shoes red shoes
I wonder if you were picked up
and owned by another like me
who loved you and kept you

without wear and tear.

Poem Book

Go now,dear book go
The Master's pen now bleeds
Where you go,i hardly know
But I'm sure someone will read

The dark thoughts the Master wrote
Passing fancies he held so dear
Like a song with pain in every note
But you must not shiver in fear

Be aware some will look in disgust
And scorn the works you hold therein
Never utter a single word
Just remain in silent mourning

For the Master's heart is torn
Your departure has made it so
He spends his days sad and withdrawn
Pacing hopelessly to and fro

Where is my book of verses
The words that elated my soul
Have you found a poetic oasis
Free from stress,worry and control

But you were more than a friend to me
My ready company any time
In you I found a friend indeed
In you my passion and pain combined

Words cannot express my grief
And tonight I'm broken again
My affliction won't embrace any relief
It's all tears and parting's pain

Go now,dear book go
The Master bids you goodbye
I've lost so many things but none
Has ever made me cry

   Magical Motoring

   Oh mystical, melodious
   Fine four fendered friend
   To where have you flown?
High and low have I looked
   Maybe under the bed?
   Or perhaps the sofa?
   Fearing suffocation among rubbish
   Of some malodorous trash bin
Buried there by the creepy candy man

As if from heaven you came
   One December morn descending
   White articulated wings spread
   Polished silver bonnet gleaming
   Poised for adventure
   A time when fantasy reigned
   And dreaming my vocation

   Hour after hour transported
   Along seashores of imagination
   Cradled between fingers propelled
   Envious little brother trailing behind
   Like a despotic Baron
   Screaming “I vont dat cah”
   Happy relief from adult-sized pain

  Dearly do I miss you
  Would trade anything,
  Even my baseball cards
  In shoe box packed
To see, to touch you again
If one day a bang bang I hear
Running will I come toot sweet
A bientôt, mais pas au revoir
  My pretty chitty

I lost it so young
The innocence
The will to live
The dreams of love
The desire to move
I was so little
What happened to children
They are meant to be cherished
Held against a mother bosom
Hushed until the tears stop
Rocked until the shaking recedes
I needed mommy
I needed to be told all will be ok
I wanted to be help
But now I was supposed to be mommy
How could I
I was so young
I mourn the day I lost it all
I ache to have that back
I want to have that innocence back
When it was stolen so long ago

Goodbye Hairtie

Hair tie around my wrist,
maybe something I no
Longer need. I missed
You even though
Something about you
Was breakable, weak
And always twisted into
Knots. You always speak
To me in my times of
Need and when my hair
Was a mess. Your love
And support was there
Even when I screamed
And threw you away
In disgust. I dreamed
Of a way for you to stay.
My hair tie, you are lost
With all of the other ones
Below my bed and tossed
Into the trash. Goodbye buns,
Ponytails, pigtails and other
Hairstyles when you are
Needed. You are my mother,
And friend, but you are far
Gone. You were my star.

She thought if she held onto you, her childhood toy, she would keep her sanity.
Kept safe at night with you guarding her from where she cradled you in her arms, life's misery couldn't sully her.
Glass eyes reflected a smiling girls face, despite the bruising marking it.
Soft Dalmatian fur tickled the girls nose, soaking up her tears.
Such a friend was hard to find.
Gifted by her daddy and ripped away by him for being naughty.
Out of reach at the bottom of a thrift stores bargain bin.
The woman of now dreams another child got you, so you could help them, the way you saved her.
