Message Muse

My mind is full of broken bottles
Broken glass everywhere
Some clear, some green
Some blue, some even pink
Bottles of every type and shape
Different thicknesses abound
All have stoppers or caps
All bottles waiting to be fixed
In amongst all the glass
Are thousands of rolled up scrolls
And the occasional ship
I am the bottle inspector
I am here to fix the bottles
Meld the glass together again
I am here to home the ships
To ask the captains why
They came aground here
My main job however
Is to read the messages
To understand the messages
To ignore those from desert islands
And those written when drunk
I reply to those that I need to
Some messages are from outside
Most are internal memos
Things learned reminders
Passing thoughts like ships
Things not finished
Things not taken care of
Love notes
Break up letters
Dear John
From birth to present
These are my muse
My inspiration
From where
All my poems flow

You must, I think, have a fascinating muse, David_Macleod! Thank you for bringing it to the group. I shall have to check out what messages your muse has shared so far...

                                                    ?Muse?

                                         Dramatic.
                                                     Angry.
                          My muse deceives.
                                                       Yet it transcends and
                                  bewilders the thoughts that
                            recoil within.

                                           It clashes... like swords
                                                               like beasts it gnaws....
Poking its fingers into my raw wounds
                                                                picking at my scars.

                        It infiltrates my brain.
                                                 It infiltrates my life.
                     Paranoia seeps from my muse
                                               like a double edged knife.

                                It tells me I'm trash.
It pounds me like a hammer.
Breaking me down, as I try to escape
                                                   the cliche,
and unexpectedly, forces me to rise higher.

                              My muse chains me,
challenging me to break these padlocks.
                                                      It chokes me
it's obstacle course--a race against the clock.

                          It burns its way
                                                  a path of return.
                                   Filling me with angry
                                                            semi-poetic words.

                                                        It hits with me rocks
and bricks.... making sure I never forget its name.
                             I love and hate my muse;
a toxic demon also known as Pain.

The Poet and His Muse

He looked at the sky with weary eyes,
And spoke to the constellations once again,
“Return her to me” he said with a defiant heart,
In a whisper which time and space transcends.

His voice carried through the galaxies,
And bewildered Gemini asked “is he talking to us?”
Looking for the one that was claiming her soul,
And then noticed a disheartened Taurus.
“She was almost given to me” the bull said,
“For it seemed her time to join us here,”
“But he’s claiming her return” the twins declared,
“And it seems that the fates are quite clear.”

And the poet offered his life instead,
As it seemed the he could not bear,
The pain that pursued his aching soul,
To lose his muse would be too much despair.

And the Universe returned her to him,
Distressed and wounded and scarred,
For the forbidden ascension left empty,
A light missing among the stars
And that’s alright with him
As he cradles her in his arms.

MISCELLANEOUS

I’m strewn around this place limbless legless beheaded
but my heart remains in my flesh, and my soul. . .my soul
lingers over the remains of this unfeasible torso as I lay across
this slab, my viscera a buffet of fragments resembling colours in a
Monet landscape portrait all puree as if someone had stuck my brain
into a blender creating a splendid vision locked in Transgression as
the sea of tranquility etched in the moon brings about events of
cataclysmic proportions within the relentless of my dismembered body
because it desires to embrace life and death in words, to envelope around the
necessary of our counterparts, to guise to heed to respire to savor. . .
oh how that sea of tranquility awaits me awaits me awaits me
just to be the death of me the death of me the death of me

This was not an easy comp to judge. The very nature of it made that a foregone conclusion. I knew that going into it. And for that reason I asked another writer to help me look through them for a second set of mind-prints.

Your words have a way of reaching in and gently tugging on the soul…until the end of the read. By then the reader suddenly realizes that gentle grip is a solid fist filled with their breath. You very much earned the win on this one. Congratulations.

I read your words, all scattered and out of line fashion across the page and was struck at how perfectly their structure (or lack thereof) fit the words. You’ve named it perfectly with your last line and I wish I could also award a trophy to you. For this reason I named you first runner-up, although the system rarely respects the order in which we select our runners up. I wanted it on record in my words.

I was struck as I read your words at how much I can relate to them. Sometimes it seems like the mind is so full of broken glass and we have to sweep some of it out onto a page just to move through it. However, those colored bits of glass also provide different perspectives, colors casting different images upon the sands of our minds. We see things differently, hear things differently. Your poem made me think and that’s why I’ve awarded you as a runner-up. Thank you so much from bringing your thoughts to this comp.

A few mentions:
Naughtymouse
Your muse wound its way through the write very seductively and brought me big smiles. As always, your words are beautifully expressed and flow flawlessly.

I confess I read your piece several times and it made me both sad and happy at the same time with each read. You brought to life a very mystical feeling and I much enjoyed the read. Yours is an amazing talent and I’m very grateful for your entry.

Miss_Sub
I found myself lost in your words and blanketed in nature and beauty. Your muse is a much respected and ancient entity. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention.

To everyone else who entered, thank you so much for joining. Each piece is remarkable in that it represents a piece of you.

Congratulation Shadoe!!! In all honesty, I entered this competition because of you.
That poem just struck a cord in me and inspired me to try my hand at forming my muse into words.

Thank you Ash for the runner-up and I'm so glad you liked my entry.
---And to everyone else, I'm glad I entered this comp.
So many great poems with inspirations of their own.
Superb.
