Eve

In days when smiling was
not allowed
in photographs, colored
film would not have
mattered; all
was grayed in drought.

Furrows
beneath her feet, became
pregnant, and
from the dusts, arose
life.

Tendrils, fighting
the wilt, sprang forth in
greens, offending
barren landscapes and
the eye, used to drabness.

She strode silently among
camps, unseen, and
raindrops fell from
her fingertips, quenching
each new shoot, left
where her soles touched the Earth.

They’d prayed for water, and
The Lord heard
their hope, while Eve kept walking
through the Dustbowl, scattering
dew and grasses on the winds.

“Enough! and “Arise!”
Beat in your ploughshares—
the Angel of the Lord is
among you, yet.

We have birthed
a cry in our hearts, and
planted something new, for
out of the deserts, dry bones
come to life.

Gathering
(a sonnet)

He fills both hair and arms to glory her
With all the flowers lavender and blue.
Draws scent to waiting nostrils blossoms' stir
That seems to match the tremor of their hue.

He shakes the dewdrops all until they're gone,
To rain upon her eyes and lips between.
She so adores the muted light of dawn
That keeps the colors of her buds pristine.

The other colors of this pallet bring
A daisy wheel of yellow, red and peach,
To give to her a rainbow arc of spring,
And give to him her love within his reach;

In future parting seasons colors fade,
Their scent however never dies away.

Gardening

I have been a gardener most of my life
Growing fruit and vegetables for family and wife
My first attempt at growing when I was only eight
Lettuces in our garden from the bed to the plate

When I was even smaller 'Dig for Victory' was the cry
World War Two allotments; Hitler to defy.
Growing food has been the focus, where I spend the day
But flowers and shrubs always give a good display.

To eat a plate of vegetables you have grown yourself
Far better than those stacked upon the shelf
You can guarantee them free of the residues
Of the chemicals that commercial growers use ,

So now it's Spring get out in the warming sun
Dig your plot ready; planting can be fun
Tend the bed all Summer removing all the weeds
A copious Autumn harvest supplies all Winter's needs.

Fruit trees and bushes are an asset in the garden
Less work than with vegetables, they are not a burden.
Enjoy this outdoor pastime, it keeps you fit and well
Gives a great contentment and your worries to dispel

FALSE MOREL

Among the spring morels
Sprouts a deadly poison mushroom
So beware little brother
One kiss mistaken
Of an imposter's love
Will contaminate your heart
For all others forever

ROJO ROSE LOVE

You cannot grow roses
And not expect to bleed
Every lover of roses knows this

Pain sates their need
Ask any rose gardener
Blood meal is their feed

True love will also cause you pain
For someday one lover will die
And the other will remain

For Love and Roses
Are one and the same
Pain and suffering
Is part of the game

WE HAVE FLOWERS

They do have guns
But we have flowers
So don’t fear little one

Those mean evil men
Will not prevail
Love wins in the end

See the pretty flowers
They do not run
So fear not my son

Those that hate grow nothing
Those that love grow gardens
Let's plant some seeds

Tiny Plant

Green bowed
she was graciously wrapped
in small parcels of succulence,
for she had never known
the undeniable mercy of rain

her exploring tendrils-
the small hands of a child
curled her curious palms
around her Father's wrists
(for to grow was to create,
and to create was to live)

dormant,
the potters wheel once spiralling
birthed motions of certainty;
widening circles expanded out
filled with effervescent Earth,
prayers of the emerald new.
