Poetry Contest

A poem expressing how you feel and what you'd do when it rains.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f248/jadepandora/only%20in%20a%20storm%20banner%201.png
Hello everyone, and welcome to Only in a Storm, taken from the quote "There are some things you can only learn in a storm".  As I speak, where I live is being slammed by incredible amounts of rain in one of a string of storms that have been passing through on what the forecasters here (California) call the "Atmospheric River"!  Right now, cable and street lights and intersection signals are down, and sirens can be heard all around due to this.  And in spite the possibilities of power failures in our homes, what have I decided to do?  Why host a new competition!

Oh!  And it's all about rain!  Give me your storm-inspired writes. Any poetic style about your feelings of rain's reality, dark side, fantasies, love affairs, of tenderness, humorous, mildly erotic, grief, struggles, hope/ hopeless, life & death, metaphoric.  Please look over the guideline/rules, then go out in the rain drops and play... I mean, WRITE! --your host, Jade

Guideline/Rules:
1  TWO WEEKS duration (updated)
2  TWO POEM limit per poet (updated)
3  Poetry only (no prose or prose poetry
4  New or Not New
5  NO Extreme Content
6  No collaborations
7  Title your ink (include quote # if used)
8   If a link is used, DU only, NO outside link
9   Observe respect, No abuse
10 Note me re: comp questions

Here are a few quotes about rain if you'd like to use one to write your poem about (add the # with entry title)

#1: "Don't pray when it rains if you don't pray when the sun shines." -Satchel Paige

#2: "I violated the Noah rule: predicting rain doesn't count; building arks does." -Warren Buffett

#3: "Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life." -John Updike

#4: “I am sure it is a great mistake always to know enough to go in when it rains. One may keep snug and dry by such knowledge, but one misses a world of loveliness.” –Adeline Knapp

#5: "The drops of rain make a hole in the stone, not by violence, but by oft falling." -Lucretius.

#6: "I don't consider myself a pessimist. I think of a pessimist as someone who is waiting for it to rain. And I feel soaked to the skin." -Leonard Cohen

#7: Anyone who thinks that sunshine is pure happiness, has never danced in the rain.

#8: "Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby." -Langston Hughes (excerpted from "April Rain Song")

Happy Hour

I found myself slowly nodding
Affirmatively
By then.

Rain does that.
Must've been the same rain
As his.

But could he hear the lonely
roaming hiss
Of hydroplaning?

Where I sat
I can't tell when it's raining
Till the front door opens

As traffic goes by.
But for now

The clink of shots,
The crack of cue sticks and
Pool balls next door

And a low murmur of gin,
Sports talk
And sex

Starbucks, Morning Rain, and Thoughts of You
(a villanelle)

In angled light, the droplets fall,
In hanging perch of first Spring bud.
In wet storm’s grace, I feel your call.

She comes through gush of streetlight’s pall,
With “pussy" ears to fend the flood.
In angled light, the droplets fall.

In Fords of wet white drives recall,
It’s you whose breaths have thrilled my blood.
In wet storm’s grace, I feel your call.

The dance and bitter tasting squall
That brings us dragon magic rubbed.
In angled light, the droplets fall.

The hottest burn, my tongue’s enthrall
That stirs the flame, skin’s blushing rudd.
In wet storm’s grace, I feel your call.

The blow, the wet, the white Ford's thrall,
The dance, the gale, how thrill lifeblood
In angled light, the droplets fall,
In wet storm’s grace, I feel your call.

When It Rains [ Competition Poem]

When it rains I will stand under it to wash my pain away

When it rains I will wash away these tears that God will take away

When it rains I will be at ease for the pattering sound that hits the ground is so turbulent yet so gentle.

When it rains I will let my every emotion go till it rains no more

When it rains I will cry as loud as the thunder

When it rains I will have the chance to let out my inner pain till I'm too exhausted to even keep on going.

When it rains it will pour down on me as I'm washing away all my troubles and tribulations

When it rains I will dance under it as I feel one with the rain

When it rains I'll feel cleansed of my inner fears

When it rains I will feel free from everything that's trapping me inside.

When it rains will you come and join me?.

         cry down the rain

sleep must be something that’s
awarded only to the dead

you contemplate things like that
when it’s late & you’re alone again
on another endless night

staring out the window at the
sorrowful rain that makes it seem
like everything out there is crying

that’s when they get up & dance again
those memories buzzing in your head
like piano melodies haunting the cracked
leatherette stools of a long-lamented
boarded up roadhouse

heartbreak that’s gone mellow over
the solitary years but still lingers
these faded blues

so you gather up the dismal
pieces of your soul
that still remain

and you pray your silent prayers
to the brokenhearted angels
that cry down the rain

TROPICAL STORM CLOUDS    (Migrating over Galveston Island Texas, 7-11-99)

white clouds
    loom
like mythological
    god lands
cumulus mountains
    moving in
overtaking
    every horizon
in towering
    legions
of morphing
    exotic
ancient cities
    like lost realms
shangrilas
    marching forth
in monolithic
    crusade
overwhelming
    blue sky
dominance
    above our heads
snowy himalayas
    billowing up
in heaps
    bulbous  roiling
mass muscled
    crawls
gradually blocking
    sun from sight
epic tidal waves
    tumbling down
towards us here
    so small
so far below
    as distant
dark rains fall
    wild thunder
comes stampeding
    rumbling power
erupting up
    from southern gulf
in wild herds
    driven on
by whipcrack
    lightning storms
soon trampling down
    upon us all
sheltered  hiding
    here below
we little ants  🐜
    trembling now
in wonderment
    or fear
either way
    are humbled
upon this
    wondrous
living earth
