Poetry Contest Description
Today we saw the passing of a television icon. Write a poem dedicated to Mary. Two week deadline, vote will determine the winner.
Here's my dedication to Mary. (Not to be considered in any way for the competition.
Mary Tyler Moore
Born: December 29, 1936
Died: January 25th, 2017
Happy Hotpoint or just Mary
Mary Tyler Moore embodied
Wholesome sexuality
Not another pretty face
She was a template
Of the woman of the 70’s
Professional and adventurous
Liberated and independent
Everywoman wanted to be Mary
Everyman wanted her as a wife
Mary Richards, lighting the world
With your infectious smile
You’ll be forever missed
Tonight we give Mary
A finale goodnight kiss
“Sweet dreams sweetheart”
“Have a peaceful rest”
Mary appeared first appeared as 'Happy Hot Point' in commercials during the 1950's. A YouTube link to one of her first appearances is provided.

Mary
Oh! She could turn the world on with
Her smile.
'Twas the reason to be her for
A while.
Polite & pert & mom & wife;
Woman
As diabetic hero was
My world.
I won't forget what she gave me
To be,
To throw my hat high in the air,
Memories!
And now that's what we have of her
To keep
But will this ever be enough
To share
To follow from her book of life
Believe
It is my feeling now she's gone
We'll care
By men & women & the kids
Who grew
And wanted to be just like her
The most.
It's not impossible you know
Come on
Let's all of us start holding hands
And pray
To be as good as Mary was
Today
I turn to you & you & you...
And YOU
To promise just how much I care
With heart
My heart is where she'll always live
And teach
Just like my other heroine's
Best part
We know her, MadameLavender,
That peach,
A living Mary Richards in
Our midst!

I'm floored that I missed this passing ... MTM was iconic. Loved the MTM show (I had a crush on Rhoda) ... most impressive were the shows produced by the company her husband, Grant Tinker, and her founded.

Of Mary and Little Girls
I was born into picture shows
named after Tammy and the Batchelor
immersed in the "make-love-not-war"
60's tie-dyed/anti-Vietnam movement.
Too young to be a true flower child
I was resolved to television shows
and the music my mother loved --
Tom Jones and Mary Tyler Moore.
I remember her eschewing heels
for flats and skirts for capris
to revolutionize a deep south
right along with Minneapolis.
Me? Well, I got the switch across
my back for tossing my crocheted
beret into the wind on Mississippi
highway I-55 S, just like Mary did.
Wanting me to wear it to class.
Honestly, what did my mother expect?
Looking back, my lessons have been
necesssary, small and big, but always
with the hope of bettering a future
even in these current times of doubt.
Those 70's dreams of making it alone
led to the city and my first apartment
in the 80's, and love all around me
from family, friends, and neighbors.
40 years later and I can say
I made it on my own; I'm here
but, wonder if I would've believed
I could watching only June Cleaver.
We never really know the full impact
one show or personality has upon us
or a smile that exudes happiness
to become the dream of little girls.
And another day, just like Mary now
I'll have finally made it [home] afterall.

Wow. Thank you so much for this, DUP members. xo
And thank you, snugglebuck, for the opportunity to walk down memory lane.
Jade, you are a worthy opponent. I have no doubt it was close.
