George R. R. Martin…..the man!

The night is long and full of terrors they warn
Winter is coming on the fields once sunlit
Shadows and whispers on cold winds borne
When the sun has set, no candle can replace it

The moon hides its face in its shame
Walls made of ice eventually submit
Those armies of ice are immune to the flame
When the sun has set, no candle can replace it

The moon hides away and so does the sun
Swords made of ice, they still won’t commit
Now the wars of the living are won
When the sun has set, no candle can replace it

Dragon glass shimmers in the dark
Valyrian steel and flames the dragons spit
Is the outcome so cold and stark?
Where the sun has set, no candle can replace it

Incessant winds of winter, a dream of spring
The lord of light burns, the fire is lit
Snow or a fire, a queen or a king
Where the sun has set, no candle can replace it

3.“It is the quietening of the day that most appeals.”
― Fennel Hudson

Civil Twilight

Shadows like
spilled milk, seep
across bone-white skin,
mine—

and I grasp the last
flickers of light, horizon-swallowed
into purple-hued
hills, gray-blue seas.

I turn to ashen tones, fading
like the toils of the day, silenced
in reverence for things
needing to be heard
in the night—dreams
of future dawns, impartations
left by messengers to
the soul—

Slumber, for
new wineskins await their
fill of the spirit of God, to
pour out on flesh, renewed,
illuminating even the darkest
of places, and
dusk will no longer
be needed.

damaged, broken, busted

You dont posses the power within you to hold, to melt, to mold all the small pieces of my soul
To fix all of the stuff, piece together all of the "extra parts", the junk
Quiet the monsters, silence the demons, smother the pain,  the hurt, the anger, the rage-that burns hotter than the fires of hell which hath no fury like mine
All the small pieces that glitter and sparkle; the sharp edges prick my fingers and lay open my hands as I struggle to gather them up and clutch them to my chest like treasure-like gold
Get back!
Get away!
Don't touch them they are mine!
I am them!
They are me!
Embracing my achingly beautiful stones in my bleeding hands I turn and face the abyss that I call home
I have no fear-no regrets
All the small pieces are mine
My confidants, my traveling companions
As shattered and haunted I turn into the madness I am forever doomed to roam
Knowing you will not follow me for you haven't the stones; you have not the strength to weather this unstoppable, immovable object
Me being this fiercum beast, a most frighteningly, chaotic beast
A sad freak of nature, a twisted, massive, dark cloud of doom
It is I who will stand lonely, lost and alone
The hurricane, the wayward wandering gypsy, a tsunami
The storm

Legend

[font=Lucida Sans Unicode,Lucida Grande]
Was it her skin, flurried in drifts
of rose beyond a copse of crowns
drawing such a reluctant light
from a heavily pursed brow

Was it her innocent glance back
easing doubt enough to accept her
fleeting descent pursued by a slated
rogue of blue ‘ore rounded earth

As a last unicorn of somber forest
following a vestal virgin to its death
knowing, “When the sun has set,
no candle can replace it.” Except

The Moon and her astral entourage
from which all legends are sourced.

A name I don't recall said dusk
“is the quietening of the day that most appeals.”
I think maybe he's right
Yes, he must be
Because I miss those summer days
With their Post sunset atmosphere
We stayed after everyone left
I think it's even prettier after it sets
I layed down
You climbed underneath
And we sat silently
Just like we do
Peacefully alone while together at the same time
Peacefully sad but happy at the same time
Wondering about our futures
And laughing about the past

“It is the quietening of the day that most appeals.”
― Fennel Hudson

I was a sunshine of a girl
Bitten by the night and I
Have learned that there is peace
In the darkening sky.

Daylight
Brings noises that rattle my heart.
Children laughing and people passing by,
Hand in hand,
Too bright for the darkness seeping in me.

But I fell in love
With dusk
When I was drunk in my youth -
In dreamy love stories that rarely hold truth.
I fell in love with dusk...
When I had no hope
For another dawn.

It was easy.
It was seeing the sky slipping into its
Soft fabrics,
A touch of lightness,
A touch of bright lights in the distance.

I wanted to creep in its comfort and
Hazy ways. It
Intoxicates.
I wanted to play the music of these veins,
The drumming beats in my head
In the quiet that
Breaks and builds me,
And fills me.

I wanted to capture it in words
The way it captured me.

I got lost somewhere in the twilight sky
And emerged into the night.
The dawn is slowly reaching.
I may have left the stories behind,
But I
Always come back.

I have found this sleepy heart.
I have found its peace.

I have found it there...

"Outside, daylight was bleeding slowly toward dusk.”
― Stephen King

The Fear In The Fade

Ask yourself who wields the knife
while blood drains from sorrowful sky
the weight of earth turns ever darker
as purple fades to pale

tree tops burn as a last gasp candle
looming after luminance, twisted and ominous
bearing vigil with hoot and claw
a low sigh sifts from ghostly willow

white-moth and fire-fly twist amble bat
shrieks herd un-furl brave men to inside
light the torches stoke the fires
mist to moor comes crawling

hewn hills hide a cause-way to black
fields that glow gold sullen flat
I watch the green blades woe
unto night
asking myself who wields the knife

I thank you, our lovely host Grace, for the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful competition, and for honoring my work to be a runner-up.

I congratulate UbiquitousVoid on his fine work to win the cup, and to Ahavati for her write that I saw first over where it's published.  I'll be going there shortly to add it to my RL.

All the best to those who entered, with my regards!  --Jadey
