Poetry Contest

Haiku / Senryu on Any Topic                                                                     17 Total Syllables (most common is 5-7-5)
dances un-rhymed lines,
syllables five seven five,
and one thought stated
======================

originally, Haiku were seasonal in nature and juxtaposed two concepts or ended with a strong closure.  and consisted of 17 "on" which have a rough correspondence to 17 English syllables.

Senryu are 17 "on" or syllables and are more about human Foibles,

Haiku are Serious,
Senryu are cynical or darkly humorous

Western Haiku focus more on syllables and lines than topic

======================

Suggested,
5 Syllables In the First Line
7 Syllables In the Second Line
5 Syllables In the Third Line

have seen it done that words were just stacked or in a line to total up to 17 syllables

Haiku New Year Wish

1
where e'er you may live
be the spirit of the wind
for both young & old

2
take care of each one
who has touched your heart & soul
and has lifted you

3
free one from anguish
the year was grim for many
that one will free you

4
my simple wishes
like smooth pebbles on the shore
come and be the wave

5
take these pebbles for
creatures that run, fly and swim
they carry you too

6
for the plants and trees
and know that earth will thank you
with the air we breathe

7
both the rain that falls
and the snow on mountain peaks
be the clouds that guide

8
while the shadows pass
be the seagull's lonely cry
on the thunder's tide

9
to ride till coasting
o'er the monuments of time
of your home and mine

(this is a Renga, a set of linked Haiku)

Her pussy, Liz looked up and
Asked, "Want to join in?"

Omgosh thank you so much, Mr Cameron!  This was a wonderful competition, and I was grateful to post an entry due to my love for Japanese short form poetry.  My congratulations to the runners-up xmar82 and our Mr Snugglebuck, and all the best to everyone who participated... with warm regards, Jadey
