( A murder of Crows)
Self Pity
Here I sit and
Dine on my pity
Of the people I knowingly displeased.
Here I sit and
Whine on the morrow
Of the things I regretfully failed to do.
Here I sit and fight to
Drink the bile that sprang
From the well of mine own sins
It has left me without the will
To taste of life
Never more

(a murder of crows)
ANGELS AND CROWS
exposing
her face
an open scream
like portraits found hanging
halls papered in cloth squares
with angels, and black feasting crows
I walk the soft hookings
standing briefly to admire
reaching to adjust
the lines(’)

(10. A Husk Of Hares)
Skinned
My father shot pheasants,
pigeons, rabbits;
most things that moved
he'd bring three birds home
tied together at the neck
their heads lopsided,
eyes closed, claws relaxed
the brilliant male plumage
painting strange rainbows
against the outhouse wall.
I can skin a cottontail
in one piece
it's methodical work,
a meticulous bond
of steel and skin melding
in perfect sequence
sinew peels back to reveal
pink meat, cloaked grey
prostrated and gelatinous
the way nature intended it
the quietude of it all,
the death of all bones
fracturing, blow by blow
under weight of a blade.
Flash forward fifteen years,
I've locked the bathroom door
peeling back the skin of my jeans,
the mottled flesh red and raw
the silence lingering, familiar.
It's methodical work,
a meticulous bond
of steel and skin melding
in perfect sequence
prostrated and gelatinous,
the way nature intended it.
