Poetry Contest

show me how you would write a eulogy or/and requiem for a suicide victim
new pieces only
any style of writing is acceptable

I've recently been tasked with the description above, and it's left me wondering how others would approach it. Admittedly, I haven't been on DU much recently, but it still holds a place in my heart and I absolutely appreciate everyone who can take the time to participate in this competition. It's a special one in loving memory of someone important to me.

If you're confused or have any questions feel free to PM me

Hello to the host, I'm sorry about your friend, with the task I too had given to me, as an honor.  I hope you will take my small simple offering (for that is how it's meant to be) in the spirit intended.--Jade

As a child so high
I remember how
you'd spend a
summer's Saturday
morning rising
following along
an alley fence
on and on, in song
with a netted hoop
that you would
from time to time
SWOOP
o'er weedy scrub
that clung against
the weathered slats
in hopes to catch
a butterfly
which would startle
as you'd pounce upon
and watch it fight
to gain its flight
till capitulation
was in sight
and that's when I'd
upturn the net
and set it free--
and now you know
that it was me

Fly Free

If we find connection, a single tie
strong enough to bind us to this earth,
or better still, a spider's web of threads,
each thin as gossamer but together strong,
staunch as silk and supple enough to bend
and mold round any obstacle

then we could bridge the deepest divide
the widest gash, the worst assaults.
Even the cold steel of neglect, that which wears
us down and leaves us keening in our fear,
abandoned with the screaming in our ear.

If only we had seen your need,
extended our hands and all our mustered
warmth, enfolded you with enough trust
and love and hope to keep you from the brink.
We are unmoored by losing you.

Adieu, our friend. Fly free.

Sojourner

Hark—do you hear
the sound
where the road wears thin,
and  pavement falls
like flakes
into the stars?

Because we are
at the end
of all that’s now,
spiraling down—oh see
the clouds;
they watch us grieve,

and fingertips
flip
coins into the night—
they take flight
and pay your way.

Tears of life
plink into puddles
where God still holds your heart
in His palm—
cry a song
and bid farewell;
scattered shells
on stormy sands,
wash the tides
to other lands.

Rabbis pour their mantles
against walls
stuffed with prayers
waiting for answers,
as monks chant
lonely notes into urns
filled for passage
to where you are—

We let go the roses
and turn as they fall
away,
leaving behind
only the scent of attar,
while bonfires
burn in my soul
to the drumming in my veins.

(sending condolences...)

You idiot

Were you expecting sympathy
from your outcry for attention
at least you did one good thing
You didn't carry on moaning
You weren't gonna live with it
You decided to leave
This may seem insensitive
but what is done is done

You were lost
Ten thousand years couldn't pay the cost
An ocean of tears could never exhaust
The miles of sorrow your heart has crossed
You felt alone
The heaviness of your soul groans
Whenever you'd look above nothing would become known
Just songs of gods judging on their thrones
As cold and isolate as stone
Looking down on these bones
Now you are dead
Nothing is numbing so now there's nothing for you to dread
You looked upon darkness feeling your soul unthread
Your pale eyes staring far ahead
Where you found two paths
So you followed the one that you felt led
And you left the ground as you made the upward tread.

It only took a second

It only took a second
The glass flower fell
Onto cobbled stone shatterd
Pieces of rose
in the groves of the road

It took years of sadness
To bring you to the balcony
Crying out again
We didnt listen

You left us behind
Sadness your death
You were our rose
Our brittle flower

The Lucky One

You are the dandelion leaning against a wishing well
Kneeling at the steps of tolling monastery knell
The whispering wind ruffling golden leaves
The silence rolling in the final trailing ink

The trembling dew rolling on emerald fields
Bluebells bowing in eternal blessed bliss
Sun-kissed snowflakes melting stoned hearts
Rippling memories to love’s tune divine

Sorrow and mirth in receding footsteps
The light that shines in moonlit tryst
Free of fear fly to cloudless skies
We shall meet again, fly lucky one
