Poetry Contest

Different Images of Rain: Competition closes on 31 Aug, 2011
Dear All,

Happy Monsoon to you all! In India we are hot and humid and the climax will be soon outbroken in the form of rain...

Rain has been used as a very powerful symbol in poetry since time immemorial. So I have decided over here to start this "Rain Rain Come Again"..contest.

Use different images of rain in each one of your poetry. More than one entry is also welcome.

I will select the best one which will wet my emotions.

I am expecting some really good stuff over-here.

The rain came lashing down.
It was windy too. The trees waved and bowed,
Their leaves dripping big heavy splashes
Of rain water.

I ran outside, stood beneath the deluge
And let it wash all over me.
I did not feel cold. I felt euphoria,
A kind of energy. My hands open
Face held up to the heavens, not wanting
It to stop.

My hair grew dark and wet, my cheeks
Rosy red, eyes sparkling.
I love the rain, and the sound
Of the leaves' fierce shushing. My skin
Is alive to every little raindrop.

I could not see it but I could feel it,
I could not see it but I could taste it.
I could not see it but I could hear it
and it was mine and it was free
and it reminded me
that I could, in fact, see the rain
though it would always remind me of you.

I used to wonder why it always rains
in blockbuster films
as the monster obliterates Manhattan
and the soldiers tremble like kids playing War.

It's forever night in the business district
as the shadow of a scale appears on a cubicle wall,
the heroes wearing slickers as stop signs and cars
glisten through the relentless downpour.

Then I grew up and realised that
it was to obscure the special effects;
our vision is short in falling monsoons.
We can't see far enough to make out the midget
operating the controls in Godzilla's head.

The urban landscapes of darkness and damp
these cut-price visionaries create
hold an accidental charm.
Imagine. You and I standing on Main Street
as the ugly monuments to greed,
the dilapidated apartments and crumbling bars
become little more than blurry neon.
I take your hand as the camera pans out
revealing what looks like an undeveloped photograph,
and you and I in the centre, the sole definites.

This one is kinda short and it sux but I managed to come up with one out of improvisation.

I stand here alone
Out in the storm tonight
The tears streaming down my face
Cloaked by the falling rain
From the storm from my sorrows
That encompasses my life now
Raining upon me forever and ever
As long as my emotions burn for you
It will never be ceased by anything
Not even the incessant downpour from above
Why were you taken from me?

there is death in the cracks of the scorched earth
thirst does not discriminate among species
the stranded gasp their dying breath
natures banquet is being served

its sickly aroma calls to the chosen guests
who work themselves a lather in unison
like a sacred dance of the deep jungle
to face the back of the reaching sun

You, my dreamy - eyed rain,
are as free as a peacock's feather;
sometimes colourful and dazzling in
your transparent tears
and sometimes afraid of your own
little shadow.

Rain rain come again
And soak away my pain
Play out your refrain
Wash away the old day
Under you I will play.

Maybe it was you, maybe it was me.
Maybe it was as simplistic as; meant to be.
Like china dolls, and clocks on the walls,
Everything is behind a glass.
And I can't touch the rain
With my hands.
And I can't feel the pain
Without the burn of sand.

Open me as a book, close me as drawer.
Hold my hand tight
And let me grow as a flower.

In the rain.

Scarecrow.

She speaks behind a curtain,
hands laced upon a bleached gown,
with twigs dismantling themselves
in her woven curls.

She breathes words of a sinner
in an iridescent tone and
hums of lullabies and white castles,
guarded by the elements.

She brushes her tangles
and speaks softly to the clouds
until the storm walks further away,
abandoning the scarecrow.

Dear Jack...You have put such a charming entry and every time I am reading it I cannot stop smiling. I can imagine you laughing once you have finished writing it.

This is beautiful and close to my judgment.
