RUN

poet Anonymous

Poetry Contest

write a poem about running
It can be a dramatic chase scene with cops and crooks,
Some kind of obstacle course marathon,
An emotional gamut run,
A "born to be wild" kind of Mad Max run,
An "end of the world" mass hysteria run,
fleeing the enemy or running after them,
running to something good (the light, your love, etc)
or other scene involving running...
WHATEVER your reason to run, write a poem about it.

The more descriptive you are about what you see, hear, feel, etc in your run, the better.

old or new creations
500 word max
rhyming poem or structured prose preferred. Run-on sentences okay, if you use them to enhance the sense of speed.
One entry per poet.

Taketh heed not stride
kneel thou head,
draw thine line in sand.

Watch where you tread
the current is too strong.

Mind when you speak
the current is too strong.

Listen closely & run.

BORN TO RUN

Those moments we had on the beach of our island paradise
Will forever be treasured in our minds and loving hearts
Written out in the stars and etched upon our identical palms
We had this common bond, strange feelings since we were young
‘Cause tramps like us baby, we were born to run’

My beloved Adelaide, how can Fate be cruel to us for so long
Visions of you only appear in my dreams, until you came along
We made love under the crescent moon all night long, till we drop
Oh baby it’s unbelievable, no words can describe how it feels
Our undying love for each other, the moment seems unreal
I wanna know if love is blind, I wanna know if love is real
‘Cause tramps like us baby, we were born to run’

Baby our town rips the bones from your back, a death trap
Beyond the horizon I could see a beacon of shining hope
As long as we keep holding on to the last strand of the rope
Can’t run away no more, as we are running out of time
If ever I die first, please don’t forget my solemn request
That you take my remains to the sea where we used to play
There’s no place like home, where my final respite should be
Until then my Adelaide, we’ll dance with our silent heartbeats
‘Cause tramps like us baby, we were born to love’

(Inspired by a Bruce Springteen song with the same title)

Run

I'm running, running fast
Run through the city
Run through the country
Run into the river
Run underwater
Run up onto dry land
Run through the streets
Run through the college campus
Run through the woods
Jump over a tree root
Jump over a log
Trip on a vine
Brush myself off
Finally make it to town
Run up to the door
Sign reads: STORE HOURS 8:00am - 10:00pm
Oh thank God! Taco Bell's still open
I'm pretty hungry now that this run is done.

Should I ride my bike
or should I run?
Mother has lost her mind again
and this won’t be fun

It is raining, and I am eight
Even if I am late, Nana will surely come home soon; I don’t care if I have to wait
I have no choice; mother swung her arm
and this time it hit me, causing me bodily harm

Before today, she used a wooden spoon or a yardstick
and I was familiar with that trick
I starting to block them, so after hearing her run upstairs to make me understand,
after she swung, I slid by her, with the railing in hand

My heart was beating; I knew I had to leave
Because if she caught up with me, I wouldn’t be able to breath
That blow, I realized, was her closed fist
I didn’t stop running and made it outside, just in case she thought she’d missed

I ran down the avenue, barefoot and crying
There was no time to unlock my bike, and I felt like I was dying
She thought I lied about the amount of change that I left on the bed
After going to the store and buying her milk and bread

I could hear her ransacking my room, throwing the mattress to the floor
Screaming for me to tell her where the candy bar I bought was, as I ran out the door
Survival instinct kicked in, and I went to the only place I felt safe
To Nanas; she lived at the end of the avenue, and this was where I’d end this race

Seeing me on the porch, barefoot with wet hair
She arrived a few minutes after I did, and she didn’t ask why I was there
She let me in, gave me dry clothes, and fed me something to eat
I told her that my mother was mad, after taking a seat

“I’m calling your mother.” She said before grabbing the phone
I heard her tell my mother that I was there, and that she better come get me and bring me home
Her voice was stern, and her tone was demanding, just before she told my mother to calm down
She reminded her that I was her oldest and that some compassion should be shown

There were no words said on the short ride home
I went to my room, as no further concern was shown
The episode went by, and my arm was sore
That night, just as I got into bed, I found a quarter from the change; it had dropped on the floor

I waited until the middle of the night
I’m sure, out of sheer fright
And I placed the quarter on top of her purse
No need to speak, as usual, the silence was always the worst

Runaway

more and more often I find myself
blowing smoke rings into vanity mirrors
trying [ & failing] to disappear
the self-purported inadequacies,
while attempting to pin tails to scapegoats,
and entertain pipe dreams
- of running-

always running;
any way, anywhere,
but always ending up
tripping into the same
nebulous figments

party heels in hand;
the unforgiving cement
would leech the warmth
from my naked,
staggering feet

I'd-stop-short--
taking in the bruise colored sky,
and smile inwardly to myself
satisfied in how it complemented
my tarnished vulnerability

I'd murmur an apology
for being so jaded
You'd tell me,
deftly reigning back
the hair veiling my face,
"It's all right,
that particular shade
suits you."

Born to run,
yet dream to fly.
Dare to dream, of touching the sky.

On the ground,
I stay all day.
But I dream, of drifting away.

Oh how this useless body has bound me,
it keeps me chained.
My spirit waned.

Lift me up,
let my spirit soar.
Higher, higher, wanting more.

Dare to dream,
chasing the sun.
Yet evermore we are cursed to run.

Wolf Hungry

the bank closes at five
and my check is only four dollars and sixty cents
but I'm a wolf tonight
my fangs and hunger pangs is proof tonight
the motivation is survival I stay out of sight
when a wolf is weak he's prey to the guillotine
he's out of steam and so they triple team
putting obstacles
but I shadow stalk them foes and I bulldoze
cash my money
get a sandwich and starve tomorrow
or bite her nipples and eat her pussy for money

I was born to just runaway
I was born to never stay

The wind that blows through my hair
Is the only thing to care

Running fast, but I'm not strong
My speed never lasts for long

Short sprints for such short distances
I clearly lack a strong persistence's

I run from love and hate
Running through a door, through a gate

I run and run some more
Always, always running through the door

This time.
It could be it.
The time when I don't run...
run away
from myself,
and stay.

But my feet are moving,
I can't even tell why,
everything I told you
seems now like a lie.

I go.
And still you wait.

And if it takes me an eternity
when I return.
Your arms'll be wide opened.
And you will be running towards me.

             KEEP RUNNING

You run in to the wood hopeing to be safe from the bullets shooting in every diretion.

You run from the one carring the gun not knowing that your death is comeing anyway.

You run and run untill you cant you fall to the ground paying to a god that dosent exsit.

I come up from be hind and shoot you in the head your sins will never be forgiven.

Keep running all you out there becuse nothing will come to save you .

The sound of my gun going off in the wood the ones still left are running and running but in the end they will die too .......

Run ( To Get Ahead )

She runs
Never looking back
Over her shoulder

She has her reasons
Especially for disliking this meanest
Most dreadful of seasons

Nape of neck kissed with Autumn lips
Chilled breath without provocation
Bites

It nips her heels
As the days become colder
And older grow the nights

She still feels
Nothing

Above
The sun floating along an ocean of blue is not missed
Always seeking her out
Like an all-knowing ever-watchful
Judge-mental eye

Incapable of piercing the solitary black cloud
Looming overhead in the sky
Where surely all things purely innocent
End up going when they die

And even now
To this very day
She can't help but run

Behind
Is where she left the past
So unkind it was

Somewhere
Back there in time
Everyone she knew
She left for dead

And even now
To this very day
She can't help but run

To this very day
They've never caught the one
Who got away with murder
So much violence
Committed
In horrific acts of self defense

Despite all the mutilated bodies recovered
From their shallow graves
Just below the frosted ground

There was not a single head to be found

Hence, another one of the reasons why
She runs
