Poetry Contest

Write a gothic poem.

Write a gothic or dark poem.

Gothic (goth-IK): a literary style popular during the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. This style usually portrayed fantastic tales dealing with horror, despair, the grotesque and other “dark” subjects. Gothic literature was named for the apparent influence of the dark gothic architecture of the period on the genre. Also, many of these Gothic tales took places in such “gothic” surroundings. Other times, this story of darkness may occur in a more everyday setting, such as the quaint house where the man goes mad from the "beating" of his guilt in Edgar Allan Poe's “The Tell-Tale Heart.” In essence, these stories were romances, largely due to their love of the imaginary over the logical, and were told from many different points of view. This literature gave birth to many other forms, such as suspense, ghost stories, horror, mystery, and also Poe's detective stories. Gothic literature wasn't so different from other genres in form as it was in content and its focus on the "weird" aspects of life. This movement began to slowly open may people's eyes to the possible uses of the supernatural in literature.

TO MY DARK LOVER

The full moon above
Shines on my love
Who stands so far
Away from me

The night is full of reddish rain
Some call it love that loved in vain
Wolves are howling
And the dark one stirs

It is no secret that I have a demon lover
Who, with me, have a brooding desire
That involves the man with
Black eyes, black hair, black hands and....
Black light in his cruel eyes

How I hunger for my Lucan lover
How can that be?
For it is a dark light I see
Feasting on the flesh and blood
Of a lady fair
Her raven hair cascades down
Revealing white shoulders
From her mouth dribbles blood
He seems to be in ecstasy

All around, dark memories gather
Wounds me - increases my dread
Of his rejection
Takes a toll upon my heart
I must have him
No matter how

My  demon lover and I
Do what is meant to be
Steal him away
From those beautiful haunting eyes

No matter that he prefers her to me
He is are no match
For I and my accomplice
We are his destiny
Soon he will be making love
To me - in company
As my demon lover
Likes to share me
With others

Onyx Eyes

Creatures whine
under sombre intolerance
pallid and dark at the same time
you know
she aint one of us
blood bottled fine wine
is a stolen gift out of our populous
all clocks now chime
its time
for mass exodus.

She steps from the portal
demons hold her long cape
encrusted in immortal
medieval and keyhole shaped
celo's groan a deep mourning
for all will not escape
her polished
eye aura
of onyx
black cover
for now its all over
in the early hours
of too late .

Gothic literature is one of my favorite genres, keep in mind that the literary Goth is in the Romantic style with embellishments of the supernatural. I doubt the vast majority claiming to write Gothic lit even know what Romantic poetry is. :/

This isn't my contest, but I hope OP and the submitters know their stuff.

Lo! How I missed you there.

A Haar befell my pensive estate was it by chance or was it by fate?
that the chilling wind illed my embrace.
as I was conscripted into the grip of the fog
and pursued by the baleful eyes of the monstrous black dog.

The encumbrance that I faced
was a tremendous woe as I paced
brooding on a certainty
that this twas nothing more but idle fantasy.

Oh! how I have missed eloquence from your Quill
it sits on my desk there now, evermore still.
Hope for me  that no Gehenna awaits my  import
as my soul stole leaves this mortal port
and beggeth  safe passage to an Elysian field
where my heart, my love,  will  find  a place to bield.

My fears and tormented doubts
like the damned, fill my mind with awful shouts.
grotesque and much akin to gargoyle skin
as between Scylla and Charybdis,I cannot win.

I hunger hour upon hour for a glint of respite
but be that as it may,it appeareth not in ill tempered spite.
The hourglass sands poureth out from under me
quickening like a sinking pit pulled me into a mire of misery.
Twere it not a bogle haunted world this one
Hermes would sendeth this letter of care
I would hold in my arms a love more rare
and behold my emerald Selenelike stare.
Lo! How I missed you there.

Midnight Lover

From darkness come
with swirling cape
a gust of cold wind
when in he swept
into the room
in long strides

His lips on mine
so possessively cold
his arms so tight
his hands so warm
his body heat
upon mine own

Engulfing us with his black
cape, swirling and flapping
in a personal wind
around him gusts
he entered me
like a branding iron

My body like a guitar
played, all sensations
undenied
explosions
within the senses
like songs in a million operas

When at last
the night grew old
my caped lover
blew my sensation up
like confetti
gentle to the ground

He left at dawn light
with the last darkness
folding his dark cape
around him
in a puff of sulfur
he is gone...again

I know he will return
summoned by my mind
a minion of the dark realm
who gives pleasure without
love and who gets none;
Just my pleasure.

The Doll:

Malevolent components,
dress haunting, but ornate,
fixated horror can't be interpreted,
at least not until your bed ridden...

Still wind falls ill,
encumbering the bones now chilled,
words get leaked through the cracks,
whispers come from the toy sack...

Misplaced evil knickknacks,
each item always looking back...
Seeing the mistress corrupts the eye,
now damned to die...

Mechanical domain,
accessories haunt, but entertain,
cursing with nightmarish dreams,
at least not until your reamed...

Exorcise the head,
by separating demonic threads,
programmed phrases go unsaid,
replaced with rantings from the dead...

Misplaced evil knickknacks,
each item always looking back...
Seeing the mistress corrupts the eye,
now damned to die...

I just read in the box, it was big and shiny and denoted importance, and I had no desire to submit anything, so I didn't read the rest of the rules.

Yes, trust me I know exactly what Gothic poetry is. Thank you though for feeling the need to tell me. If anyone else wants to ask me something please private message me. Thank you.

I think you misread my post, I wasn't asking or accusing any specific person of anything, nor was I feeling the need to tell you something in particular. I was just stating something which is purely reflective of my own experiences in speaking with people about the subject.

Although, editing your OP with a definition of the gothic might spark intrigue for those who don't understand it.

I somehow feel like my intelligence has been insulted. I opted for the latter instead, well because, I am not a hopeless romantic...blah.

Cool I hear you , I too would think it necessary to stress certain facts on a subject that I was passionate about , as it can also (being a competition) give those who may not quite comprehend the meaning of it's given subject matter , a better chance in the long run .
