Fare thee well, Spirits. We will speak your names.

I will speak their names
gently on the breath
of my heart,
on the breath of memory,
on the breath of dreams,
that sing with stars
that dance in the heavens
of their arrival in between.
I will speak their names
as lovely,
as holy,
as belonging,
to the story of remembering
for in remembering
their memories find a space
in our hearts.
sacred,
belonging,
to wind,
to earth,
to water,
to sky,
for though death comes to greets us
we are eternity moving through the
ethereal presence of being
and what we came here to earth to do,
to laugh,
to cry,
to become,
to believe,
we interweave with all those
we have touched and the
many who have touched us.
I will speak their names
in prayer,
in thought,
in song,
in chant,
gently on the breath
of my heart,
on the breath of memory,
on the breath of dreams,
that sing with stars
that dance in the heavens
of their arrival in between.
I will speak their names
as the veil is the thinnest
all hallows eve
day of the dead honoring
I will speak their names

Ofrenda

My father’s ashes sit on my sister’s windowsill
Along with other family members overlooking the yard
And whenever I visit on festive occasions
I make sure I have a drink
With a slight nod and toast to him
In honor of his memory

So I think…
Maybe when my time comes
And my kids and grandkids put my picture out
I’d want them to remember our times
As they read some of my poetry
Giggling while reading them rhymes

Then I’ll come across the bridge
Smelling the food and hearing them laugh
And I’ll say - laugh because life is good kids
As they drink and toast over my epitaph

Guys these were tough because I felt they were all genuine expressions. In the end, Slip's moved me in a most profound way. As far as runners-up, there were ties that I simply couldn't break.
