Alive in Memory
we will never forget you
we will never forget you,
they say, sometimes while
the blood has not yet
been scrubbed from
the latest atrocity scene
your names will live on forever, they say,
because you are with the angels
or at the right hand of Jesus
or god needed a few more—
anything to assuage the pain,
even as the latest flower shrines
drop wilting blossoms from despair
even as the mass derangement
serves up another and yet another
AR-15 purchase with Glock-packing
madmen spewing grievances so banal
they come with boilerplate cliches.
sometimes you hear them say that
they’re in a better place
way up in the sky somewhere
but wherever it is
it’s usually a cemetery
where the grass and the weeds
are cut down by whirling scythes of time,
where only the plastic flowers thrive
unnoticed by the passers-by.

It’s Been Two Years
You have graced my life with your commanding presence
And even though I have struggled for control sometimes
I’ve grown mostly because of you
Without you I would still be
The shell of a woman you once knew
Your steady guidance and support raised me up
When I thought I would be downcast forever
Coming out of the chaos of my own mind
Produced growing pains I never want to experience again
Now I am free
Had it not been for the last two years
I would be stuck in the dungeons of delirium
Medicated and numb
Thank you for coming back when you did
and for being the guiding force
Behind my liberation
You are truly remarkable
And even though I have struggled for control sometimes

My sincere congratulations to Bluevelvete, and for the runner-ups Fallen Angel and Eleanor. I also want to thank everyone else for participating in my competition. Each of your submissions was a beautiful tribute to your significant person or memory that's considered dear to you. I'm humbled to have read them and honored that you've shared such personal stories with us.
Sorry I missed this, I've been away from DU for awhile. Thanks so much, @LunasChild8 for a wonderfully run comp and for the generous trophy. I'm truly humbled by this win, especially with this particular poem. It came from such a deep and truly consequential internal place.
