The Queen is Dead, Long Live...Change

The worn, delicate, glass slipper
momentarily slipped,
then hung on for a bit
before falling away
from the hard steel pedal
that was her life
her country
her dominions.

For some the ripples of change
were instantaneously felt
but in time history will pinpoint
all major change, relevant or not,
back to the date of September 8th.

Queen of Hearts

Cut his head off
said the queen
don't cut my head
says the chicken
and chance cut
the head of an almost
queen.
golden egg hen and
princess cut into pieces.

old man extends his hand
in India
a black man fights
in Africa
an Indian child, almost black,
almost old,
starve to death
in any gutter.

queens don't
extend their hands
chickens don't lose
their heads for her.
The child dies!
The Indian dies!
The black man dies!

old man extends his hand...
cut off his hand
if he is a thief!
kiss his hand
if he is a Christian!

Only queens don't die.

IN OTHER NEWS

The sun never sets on the empire
For those whose sight is invaded by the dark,
Pearly kings & queens loved a knees-up at the coronation
For those who view cockneys as chirpy chimney sweeps,

She so loved her nation she sacrificed her first born
To the people of wales and called him prince,
For those who think owain glyndwr was a man of myth
Who slayed dragons on a fifteenth century game-boy

Interlude

For the serving of scones & cucumber sandwiches (no crusts)
Rose-tinted glasses available for the middle classes and daily mail readers

#22 Concentration Camp Symphony – for the hard of hearing

Can’t be arsed to write anymore. Apologies to my celtic cousins in ireland & those countries who were raped, murdered and mutilated all in the name of the empire.

No corgis were hurt or paddington bears stuffed in the construction of this ragged scribble

* I’m sure the Queen was a perfectly decent person (and few wished her ill) but represented an imperialist institution which has no relevance in the Twenty First Century. Folk need to educate themselves on Pax Brittanica. All this fairy-tale nonsense of castles, princesses and eating cucumber sandwiches under twilight Berkshire skies. Wake up.

Congrats to winner seekingkate for your poem -- short and to the 'change-point'.

Congrats also to runners-up Lepp (balanced take from an irish perspective) and to Paulo (PAR) for the historical element and the reminder that those in positions of privileged power are there due to entrenched violence.

Thank you also for entering the competition: Jordon, robert43041, Casted_Runes, dejure, Grace, mysteriouslady, and Rob. Slipalong and wallyroo92, nice entries but I'm afraid you were over the word limit.

Cheers: over and out,
Josh.

Well deserved. Sunny morning here too in Portugal. I see you're a David Whyte fan as well - good choice, good choice

Congrats to all the winners & kudos to Josh for actually judging his competition. It should be compulsory IMHO.

The Queen's death actually made me realise how little folk know about the atrocities committed in the name of the empire & monarchy.

The poet Heathcote Williams and his book-length poem "Royal Babylon: the case against the monarchy" is the one to read ...
