Well shoot, I see the one I had in mind is more of a “goodbye fall, hello winter” poem 😅 Make a comp like that then, I’ll catch you later in the season!

Season of Change

- Season of Change -

In this, a season of both color and change,
When oft the vision is most acute and strange…
The eye sees more than the senses foretell:
When truth rings clearer than a church’s bell.
A flood of memories like phantoms descend,
When my mind opens the way to ascend…
Beyond all I am, were, and couldst ever be!
I drown in them, as if I were lost in a sea.
No island in sight at which solace is found,
Just cold water: giving way to colder ground.
Ice without and fire within, neither to cease,
As my dreams are haunted beyond any peace!

Haunted by faces and forms I have known,
And some I hath loved, and affection shown.
Whither hath time taken their warmth away?
I do not know, and mayhap none might say.
For so long have I known darkness so close!
And far longer still, the company of ghosts.
I wonder what the true face of reality even is,
For I thought I couldst find it hidden in bliss!
But when bliss fades, the memories return…
And the ghosts are waiting, as within I burn.
Fire and ice, living and dead, all become one,
When seasons change, divine will be done!

My heart longs, and my fingers tremble so,
Before beautiful phantasms, pale as snow…
Lovely maidens, whose love were as gifts:
But it was in other lives when we didst kiss!
How can I separate what was from the now?
My soul and spirit are as eternal as my vow,
To find what I hath been seeking for all time.
For my fire never ceases, that flame sublime!
It must blaze, so that the ice covers not all…
And I must be strong, to heed the great call.
Around my being, I feel stirrings like music,
Playing a song as beautiful as faerie magic!

Where are they who craft such symphony?
I long to bask, in their glory, like ecstasy…
Until the seasons change again, circles full,
So that I might no longer feel such a pull:
As calls me even as I do lay in my slumber!
At least then I will not need to so remember,
The tragic past which so brought me hither.
Free will I be, of every shackle and fetter…
When the clouds part, revealing the moon!
For an instant, will part, autumn’s gloom…
And I will shine brighter, my light radiant.
The hour hastens, untold in any testament!

Not a problem! Great theme for the contest, for sure. I simply adore the autumn, and most especially the Samhain season that is so very much a part of it.

The First Day Of Fall

I welcome you, Fall
A much anticipated change
From color to color
Not as crisp nor
Quite as cold
As I would prefer

But greeted happily
In this little southern
Fishing town where
The river often smells putrid
And the pumpkins sprout
In time for when
The annual fall festivals begin

The Mediator

I spit across you
   into the eye of winter,
O' mediator 'twixt it, and summer.

Coy, and full of heraldry
       you are
with your fanfare stains of oranges
       and golds---

I shall not give up my flowers
       but will concede
on your temperatures.

I see winter there, licking its lips,
       one fang-tip exposed
in a salivating peep show.......waiting....

You always let that wolf in, coward !

Drop your leaves and run
       (like always)
leaving me standing on the shorelines
until the last breath of warmth
       sputters from your lungs.

I have my memories stored up
       like treasures
and I shall pluck my seeds
then plant them
(where you can't see them )
before you are gone .

They'll bloom back before you will
       (traitor....)

The All That Matters in the End

"If her ill dying be not on her own head, then on whose?"
 -- a rhetorical question

*

The fall appears upon a chill
autumnal in a flurry's sting
around a withered daffodil
beneath a fading swallow's wing,

yet oft as well in summer fair
the fall appears upon a chill
within a storm-swept evening air
sly slipping o'er a window sill,

or near a tiny whippoorwill
in springtime ere a roseate dawn
the fall appears upon a chill
of footprints on a frosted lawn,

and in a wintry rasping low
deep somewhere down a dying ill
beside a baby's grave of snow
the fall appears upon a chill.

*

a dedication of Respect
for
the Prevention of Unnecessary Pain

a revolving helios quatern menippean satire on
motherhood

march, 2023 -- a chill
still in the mourning air

I especially like the way the chill falls.          Regards, Robert.

Autumn

Leaves once green turn
brown, fires burn; kids
return to schools.
Weather cools and
rain pools on the land.

Fall, with Open Arms

‘Round here, the summers are brutal
Today it was One-0-Eight
(That’s 42 to some of you)
It’s so hot your skin can fry and bake

‘Round here, summer starts in April
And sometimes lasts past September
Why did I move to this place?
Dang it, I wish I could remember

But once the season changes
And the sun has a new position
Something magical happens
I begin to have a sunnier disposition

The cool breeze brings bright memories
Of my college years, of freshman days
When youth and opportunity seemed endless
When innocence seemed like a daze

Some of those names now escape me
But the faces are embedded in my mind
The places may have changed a bit
Oh, the adolescence I left behind

I can’t wait for the new season
It brings me memories of freshman days
I wait for fall, with open arms
Each year with more wrinkles and grays
