Poetry Contest

nostalgia
I grew up in the seventies
I was watching smokey and the bandit today
it made me nostalgic for those days
when my dad was still alive and times seemed simpler...

remember those days?

if you do write about it the poem most encompassing of the feeling in the air will win
I will choose the winner...

two weeks
new writes
take me back and enjoy

Ha ha ha staying alive

Mirror balls
glittering reflections
in the disco
after-party
of a evening
at the Drive In

back when it wasn't a
food court
-the real big screen
that you watched
from the back seat
of a Chevy

Drinking a milkshake
bought from the
Mini skirt
on
roller skates

We all looked like James Dean
hair slicked in Bryl-Creem
a packet of twenny
tucked in the sleeve
of a too tight
white Tee

Bell bottoms the order
for the acid-trip
and vacations
just a moment
to judge
Bikinis
and throw
Frisbees

Truth is cost us next
to nothing
we were just

stayin'
alive

Most Of All

I remember dial-up phones
oleo with a red spot
but things change
even the seasons
and color of leaves

revolving fans
and Juicy Fruit
as granny said
"Bless your heart"

I remember TV with rabbit ears
and test patterns
the Pledge of Allegiance
Aspergum
and homemade biscuits

most of all
I remember Mama and Pa

A Little More

I was driving through the Arizona desert
When I pulled into a gas station in a small town
And as I waited in line inside the store
An old song played above me

I stood there quietly
Trying to remember a memory that had no details
A feeling
An emotion of something distant
When innocence went by and bye
A pretty chorus
That made me want to go back in time

It wasn’t until a few days later
When I looked it up
It came back rushing
Flooding…
I had forgotten about Olivia’s looks
When a young boy hears a voice
A siren song
Now as a man entranced
Understanding how music
Let’s us travel back in time for just a little while
Remembering fantasies and dreams
Of innocence gone

I was born at the end of the 70s, so don't remember anything at all. I'm really enjoying reading about the time and culture I was born into though. Great work, everyone.

GOOD OL' DAYS (1970'S RHYME)

the player ate my eight-track tape
this payphone smells like beer
my pinto's in the shop again
i can't get out of here

three channels on the tv
and the broadcast ends at night
some folks can watch in color
but we got just black and white

though sunday is a day of rest
you can't buy beer or wine
you can smoke 'em if you've got 'em, though,
any place or time

viet nam still rages on
then nixon's in the stew
there's riots in old birmingham
and mayhem on the news

but let's hitchhike to silver lake
to skinny dip and play
or road trip down to georgia
for a concert there today

youth filled those days with magic
turned them golden in our minds
and now we wish the pace would slow
and yearn for simpler times

and though the world seems smaller now
and brutal in its ways
as we progress these hours turn
into the good ol' days

Prospect hell projects

I miss the days
when kids played outside
playing Relievio, Tag or Hide n Seek
till the street lights came on.
Back then,
all kids knew and understood
nationwide,
when the lights came on
it was time to go home.

“And-god-help-you !”
if a neighborhood parent caught
you outside past the light-curfew
they had no problem grabbing
you by your ear while dragging you
to your parents house.

When kids where taught to respect
their elders, and actually did
and would rather face a firing squad,
than be put on punishment
on a Friday night

Moms would invite a neighborhood
friend to stay for dinner,
because she knew
that kid was having a tough
time at home, nobody judged
people just cared back then.

Dear Diary: Summer 1979

A bicycle ride in heady air
coaster brakes and screeching tires.
A variety store's tall shelves stocked
with household needs next to the liquor aisle.
Sugary treats cost pocket change,
the old man behind the counters glassy eyes
say, 'Is that all you're buying?'
Star Wars cards and giant gum wads,
lip-chilling popsicle sticks and hoodsie cups.

A superhot car with butt-burning vinyl seats,
clothes swaying on a line, stiff and wind-starched
Mom's cooking dinner on the stove, no microwave,
Dad's plate goes in the warm oven.
Phone rings incessantly, it could be anyone or no one,
just ignore it during dinner.
Laughing about everything, penny pinching
is an automatic.

Metal oscillating fans blow hot air everywhere,
no A/C, wouldn't dream of it,
water from the hose cools us off.
Superballs, tennis for one, that ball's gone.
Don't watch too much TV, it'll give you
square eyes, especially color TV.
For God's sake, get some fresh air!
Went to get more books at the library instead.
My terrible dog is my only true friend,
even the mailman hates her.
Feeling distracted at school, homework is a vice,
I just want to do what I want to do.
Daydreams that just might come true
