As a huge lifetime fand of Wardruna I have decided to make a series based on some of their clips and songs. Wardruna has made music for almost 10 years.
Einar, kvitravn ....white raven.....is the frontman and he lives on the same island as I do, so do most others or I think the current ones are mainly from the west coast of Norway. Einar also gives lectures on old norse and scaldic poetry.
wardruna are not JUSt a band, they are very much believers of the old norse faith and traditions. They have made a series based on the runes and during their shows they have also worked with runic and ritual ceremony. Working with runes is not just working with the symbols , it is a lot about calling the runes and there are different ways to do so,
Their concerts are not just a performance as they really believe in what they do They use drums from deer hides and horns from birch bark, bronze, and goats. They are also known for creating sounds from rocks, water, ice, fire, and bones. They record in relevant places and use relevant sounds. For example, the song Bjarkan (‘birch’) uses sticks and a birch log as lead percussion. All of this creates authenticity and depth not found in other genres. They aim to connect to something larger in the past: the pre-Christian traditions or nature religions.
They have largely succeeded in doing this, or at least they are on their way. In doing so, they have, for better or worse, become wrapped up in the present cultural infatuation with Vikings. They will appear on Youtube if one searches ‘viking music.’ To a large extent they have embraced or resigned themselves to these trends: Wardruna’s main composer Einar Selvik has made music for the TV show Vikings and for Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.
The clip has the text in both Norse and English

The song Skugge is about the Shadow or the Void
It is a song about the shadow within
an echo , ripple, reflection within a reflection
like a leaking tap echoes the same drop
For this competition I invite you to write about the Shadow
I do not mean the place of emotional distress or discomfort
I mean the place of origin, the answer to the mystery
YOUR mystery connected to any of your soul wishes
Listen to the song and important are the two sentences
Elden twinger deg og meg, the fire forces you from within
Svarer eig du sjølv
Answers you find within
these are needed in your frame of writing because these two sentences are key sentences in the whole song
Write your own version
minimum of 100 words
