The kind of day that fills out a life

There are days in life that are unthinkably awful
when you desperately want to hit rewind
go back to before whatever “thing” happened
and claw your way out of your own skin.

There are even a few that are blissful
with loved ones and seashores
days you want to live over again
with music soaring like meteors.

This wasn’t either of those.
It was entirely uneventful.
It was a day with work to be done;
creative, enjoyable, non-spectacular work
a day with songbirds on my morning walk
and dreary rain by afternoon
a day with take out pizza
and kitchen party music onscreen in the evening.

A benevolent day on which to stand
neither sinking below the surface
nor floating up and losing my footing
and all those other types of days
can rest secure on its base
as poetry binds them into a coherent life.

Destined To Finish First At Last

Young and wise
King Henry Five
with might didst proclaim
*“the gentler gamester
is the soonest winner.”
commanding
that his army strive
to treat
their foe with favor
come now winning times
much sooner than later
when like altruism
fills all hearts and minds

Today, lamentably,
that peaceable player
would nary survive
but would, instead,
be eaten alive
lest nefarious
kindness thrive

With distressing frequency
I hear of me said
“you’re a really nice guy but…”
by this introductory clause I know
that the door of advancement
is summarily shut
be it regarding employment
or in love’s entanglement
by that ‘but’ I am diminished
before the sentence
Is disparagingly finished
kindness should be lauded
not punished

Oh please speed the day
when compassion and civility reign
macho bravado and meanness disdain
kindness will rule omnipotent finally
inexorably abolishing cruelty

The End

One day the confusion will become clear
Disorientation, jumbled thoughts will disappear
Clarity will reign as king with crown upon your brow
Though I’m sorry the future is not now
The pain will lessen and ebb away
Til you no longer feel it one day
While I can’t say this will happen soon
Whether this cycle or the next of the moon
I hope you find peace and rest in your mind
With nothing but love and warmth you will find
Your place in our hearts can never be erased
As all our love hope and faith in you is based

..horror riddles..

the trees mentioned it in their morning meeting
it was a clouded mess in need of a clearing
it ran high and round
through sticks and mounds
a proper muck
its thoughts got stuck
till the littlest still
waved a glowing shrill
schlavling and unraveling
her wings tucked into the rattling
they knew it would not
but the sickness too hot
for it was a day they could not forget
the amnesia however had its place
do you know what's being said here
they asked again. no one answered
they shuddered in fear
because it was the thing
no one would could should ever speak of

How to be a Winner

Loss is a failed test
Loss is a disappointing game of chess
Loss is a kiss goodbye
Loss is revealed in tears you cry
Loss can drive a cheater mad
Loss can bend a memory bad
Loss is the force of competition
Loss fires spiteful ammunition
Loss doesn’t care who is shot
Loss won’t heal the bleeding spot
Loss is the result of mistakes done
Loss means someone else has won
Loss is a stinging gift
Loss can cause an outcome shift
Loss is an opportunity in disguise
Loss is a worker’s ultimate prize.

Pay the Price

Allow me to speak freely Ghost Rider
But I’m still sad you are gone
Thinking about your loss
About your lyrics and words
And how it reached us misfits and nerds
But we found comfort in the music

You were the greatest
Always pursuing the next level
    and still improving
You were so well read
And articulate
Conveying the human experience
    and emotion
As if you spoke directly to us

So many of us copied your style
Putting you at the top of every list
And yet, behind that shy smile
You were always remained a mystery

Whenever I’m feeling down
Or nostalgic
Or inspired
I always go back and listen
I close my eyes and try imagine myself
Young again
Without a care or worry of time
Lost in the waves of sound
And that somehow
The verses made sense

Perhaps fellow Rush fans would say the same
We’re an eccentric bunch
Who love the music just as much as life itself
Always amazed
At your musical talent and writing skills

These last 29 days I’ve deeply contemplated
On what the music and lyrics meant to me
What it got me through
What memories it brought me
And what they made me feel

You were more than a professor
For many you were also a mentor
And from what I hear
Many are alive because of you
     That’s the power of music
     That’s the power of words

Maybe in ninety-one years
Two or three generations from now
They will return to these records
They will ponder about the trio that was
They will hear the message we once heard
And wonder what it would have been like
To have heard it live

I take these expressions to heart
Understanding I have to pay the price
Knowing I have to put in the work
Comprehending that life is full obstacles
Tragedies and triumphs
Heartbreak and solace
Sadness and love
Because in the end
    It’s all worth living it

A heartfelt thank you to all who helped to organize and run the competition this year💚 I enjoyed very much the experience and really only had one anxious moment during the process. I am encouraged now to write more throughout the year. Congratulations to all poets who participated as well. Bravi Tutti 👋🙏
PS. The stomp comp continues until May 7th, correct?

Hi, Gahddess; you're very welcome. We had an awesome Team this year who worked hard. Unfortunately, the Stomp the Prompt Comp is closed. We did announce it in the comp yesterday. Because competitions only run 30 days, and we started them March 31 EST ( to accommodate countries who are a day ahead of us ) we had to extend the deadline to the comps by 1 week so they wouldn't close out.

The winner of the comp is currently in the process of being voted on by Team NaPo. We will announce the winner asap.

Congratulations on your completion. Thank you for participating again this year. We enjoyed having you.
