Poetry Contest

Fact or Fiction
For this competition, I do not seek poetry.  Rather open form.  A factual planned itinerary or a fictional trip that you might want to make real one day.  Could even be one of these ''out of this world'' dream.  One thousand word max.

Of mice and...erm?

My plan is to travel to other towns
and to that end have an R.V ordered
but there's been a great delay blamed on Covid
they tell me it's missing a part of the fridge!

But, for these travels I've ordered and received
a twelve volt ' Sat Nav ' which actually speaks,
a solar electric generator
a bike rack and a folding bike, in red.

Not only but also, despite this Covid
I've received by courier and by post
gas bottles, times two, a leisure batt'ry
and " all weather clothing " for why? Don't ask!

I've even bought, now this is a surprise,
a pair of eighteen hole Doc Martens
in ox-blood red, Yes! and think of Pete Townshend
bet he's not waiting for a bit of a fridge!

Mermaid Girls

As much as Iíve enjoyed
this government holiday
itís been the longest winter
in the history of winters

days rolling into one,
starry night patches
fraying in the dark.

Havenít left this town
since November

a Groundhog Day
of worry and bad news
sucking out all the faith
left in the world

so when I stood
before the ocean
amongst Star Wars
styled sand dunes
you better believe
it felt like space.

She and I
welló we waited
for no woman

stripping down to garish swimwear
running to the tune of chariots of fire
playing over and over in my head
into the frozen knife points of the sea
pressed sharply into aching skin

never felt water that cold in my life,
but if it means feeling aliveó
if it means immersing myself
in the salted brine of existence
Iíll take that murder on the chin.

We waded outó out
to chest depth, feeling
the force of Irish waves
drumming around us,
singing campfire songs
to bright blue Gods

the dog walkers
bewildered

old men wrapped in thermals
gazing astounded at mermaid girls
in a starched collar world.

Crawling out onto the shore,
gulls crowed a fanfareó

I donít ask much of life

some good books,
a few friends here
and there

but I want always
the thrill of baptising myself
as a child of the Earth
arms outstretched
against the crashing surf

and if youíre reading this

if it resonates
with your tired soul
come and find me

weíll sing about mountains,
maybe.
