Unrequited

The party perfect are fashion late,
I shudder with a whiskey swig
and watch her through my parted fringe
If I'm drunk, I'm drunk already
no more of this, trying to be friends.

She's rolled her eyes to someone else,
swigs a gin and laughs with his friends,
"oh your so funny",
If she's drunk, she's drunk already,
stands unsteady but lands quite certain.

Around him she struts and pouts
no one has any doubt.
A single glance back, that pity half smile
that keeps me sat with my drink for a while.

You're drunk she said, still linked to his ego.
"Get lost" I said, either he goes or I go,
"who the hell are you"? she asked.

I Don't Love You

The telephone rings:
I answer, Hello!
The voice on the telephone says,
ďHi, itís Kristine.Ē
ďDid I wake you?Ē
No, I wasnít sleeping.
ďHow are you?Ē
Iím fine.
ďIíve been dying to say something to you.Ē
ďI should tell you this in person instead of on the phone.Ē
ďI hope you donít mind.Ē
Go ahead, Iím listening.
ďIíll come straight to the point, I love you.Ē
I beg your pardon!
ďI said I love you.Ē
You love me!
I hope Iím not hearing you correctly.
ďIím not joking.Ē
Hmm, how should I respond?
This isnít what I was expecting to hear.
ďI know this is kind of sudden for you.Ē
Uh, Iím sorry, sweetheart.
I really donít want to hurt your feelings,
But I donít love you in a romantic way.
ďYouíre a lonely man and you need a wife.Ē
ďI think Iím the perfect girl for you.Ē
Yes, Iím lonely and I need a wife,
But I never flirted with the notion of marrying you.
The way you feel about us is like a fairy tale.
ďSometimes dreams turn into reality.Ē
ďTogether we can make this fairy tale come true.Ē
Did you get this idea from a movie?
Itís not going to work.
Whatever youíre thinking, drop it now.
ďYour poems gave me the impression that you love me.Ē
Really!
Wait a moment:
Do you blame me for your misinterpretation?
Thatís your assumption.
I asked you to read my poems and make critical comments,
But I wasnít leading you on.
You called me repeatedly.
I answered my phone out of courtesy,
But I never called you back.
Didnít you notice?
ďI donít believe the things you wrote are just fantasies.Ē
ďAre you sure you feel nothing for me?Ē
Yes, Iím positive.
Iím not in love with you, Kristine.
If I were in love with you,
You wouldnít have to ask me that question.
Youíre a very nice girl,
But thatís beside the point.
ďWill you at least think about what Iíve said?Ē
What else is there to consider?
Iíve already made my final decision.
And I refuse to start a titillating conversation with you.
I donít mind you calling me,
But please limit your calls to a social chat.
If you canít do that,
Donít bother to call me.
ďYou sound a bit upset now.Ē
ďCan we discuss the subject further some other time?Ē
Your persistency amazes me.
No, donít waste your time.
Save your credit.
I just donít love you.
Donít you get it?
Good night, Kristine.

I Can't Stop Wooing You

My heart tells me that you should be mine.
And I cling to the hope that Iíll have you.
Though Iím trying to make you love me,
It seems that Iíll never capture your heart.
Baby, the frustration depresses me.
It hurts to see you with someone else.
Why couldnít it be me instead of him?
Iím counting on you to give me your love.

You donít understand much about love.
Why donít you love the one who loves you?
I donít get the impression that you love me,
Yet itís so hard to stop wooing you.
You treat me as a friend, not as a lover.
But I want to have a love affair with you.
How come you donít have passion for me?
I thought I could successfully seduce you.

Baby, youíve brought out the best in me.
And I feel that I owe you something.
I want to compensate you with my love,
But you wonít give me the opportunity.
I wish I could put my feelings in your heart.
Youíre endowed with love and geniality.
And I canít stop wooing you, sweetie.
If I didnít love you so much, Iíd forget you.

If old raincoats could talk

Once, drunk and out dancing
I slid off a bar stool
he didn't even notice, I was carried home
and left to dry out; on a chair.

We used to stride on Lakeland fells,
wind lashed lake side paths,
keeping close we kept each other warm,
I held mint cake he had the guide map.

Now if we go walking itís late at night,
heís ashamed to be seen with me
and feels the cold rain passing through thin skin,
I hold dog biscuits and scented bags.

A cig in the garden if Iím lucky
we never really go out any more,
when we do it always seems to rain,
anyway that mirror in the hall makes me look tired.

Ohhh but one more chance
to feel warm sun softening my shoulders,
thrown down in long grass,
picnic blanket pillow talk,
too hot to walk, dusty tracks
arms wrapped round his neck,
piggyback.
