Poetry Contest

Create your very own paradox

Your task is to create a paradox using your linguistic skills.

Your writing will be checked against the Oxford dictionary definition of 'paradox', so feel free to use that as a reference or starting point.

2 entries per poet.

Rhymes are encouraged but not essential

No character limit (min or max)

2 weeks

I will decide the winner

Here's an example to get you started:
(I'm pretty sure I made this one up as I've not seen it anywhere before, but it's possible I'm not the first to stumble upon it one way or another)

THIS SENTENCE IS NOT META

Good luck!

A Poet’s Paradox*

( *according to Oxford )

A millionaire po’etess, very strange,
To be true to myself, negotiate!
How does that rate my writing in exchange,
Let’s see what’s in the 8 ball as my fate.

Commodities in verse, it says “Fuck Yes”;
A millionaire po’etess, very strange.
I might as well proclaim a lucky guess,
Come visit me I’m at the stock exchange.

The other times I’m practicing my range,
To duet with the artist known as ‘Sting’.
A millionaire po’etess, very strange;
I’m born with perfect pitch but I can’t sing.

I’ve got the only clothes here on my back,
I’m rich as Wall but never have the change.
I try to purchase straight off of the rack,
A millionaire po’etess, very strange!

When I'm Gone

I don't believe there is a god
Claims that he exists are all flawed;
Equally there is no afterlife;
It's just a bribe to reduce strife.
Consequently when I am dead
At my funeral tears are shed
If God gets any mention
It is my firm intension
To return; and will haunt;
It is His believers I will taunt

Military intelligence

Fighting and warfare is foolish
Promoting acts that are ghoulish.
Soldiers are trained to kill
Destroy the enemy at will.
So what is so intelligent?
About the actions of the regiment.

When the Lies Became Truth

When I wanted to be desired,
     I made myself unavailable,
Those who were attracted did not see the truth,
Those not interested were sometimes inquisitive,
When I’d spit out a lie and spun it out with proof.
I’d play coy seemingly reserved and quiet,
But inside I was a riot of lust and wordplay,
Much to their surprise their eyes lit up,
When I’d make them smile with elusive display.
“Oh you write poems?” they’d ask curiously,
As the anger played out like profound heartache,
“I try” I’d say bashful and shy averting my eyes,
With a twister inside ready for an outbreak.
I was stuck in a paradox inside an open box,
When the lies became truth tactless and uncouth,
But it was a game I played without moral aim,
When I was a stubborn and cantankerous youth.

For it's simplicity, and it's clear lack of reach to seem profound or intelligent, yet meeting the criteria, the Winner is Rex. Congratulations Rex. A well deserved addition to your trophy collection
