Poetry Contest Description

New Member of the Month Feature!
Welcome to "New Member of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'New Member of the Month Hall of Fame', sponsored by Tallen.

You have 3 weeks to nominate  Your favorite poems from a NEW DUP poet - someone who has been a member for no more than six months.

To locate New Members simply click on 'Poems' > *Latest Poems > Sort Poems > New Members!  Thanks to Umm for the image and helping us old people out!

Please note the following when making nominations:

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. Until this comp is established, there is no limit to nominations; however, you can't nominate more than one poem per individual new member.  *****

3. No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

4. Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

5. Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

6. One win per member per calendar year ( 12 months ).

7. All nominators must notify their nominees of nominations.

Any nominated member who wishes to opt out of the competition may do so by messaging me. I will contact the person who nominated you and request an alternate nomination.

New Beginning

This time
is not like the last time—

this time
we are apologizing
for our wrongs—
this time
we will not fight
to be right.

This time
we are listening
to how we feel—
this time
we are acting our age.

This time
Is different
because this time
we are not the same we
as the last time—
you are not the same him;
and
I am not the same she.

This time
we can just be us
together.

No one will ask
to change who we are
because this time
is a new beginning
for us both;
and, we are here
to help each other grow.

Stand tall darling—
I'll show you the real meaning
of showering someone
with love.

Autumn Spell

In the cloak of autumn,
A silhouette adorned in gold
Bound to no one
Bows to the old ones
Saying,
"I think we've met".
She glides among the willows
Whose branches are marionettes
Whispering tales of
Royal daughters and sons.
The rivers are silent and still
Like the checkered daffodil,
Waiting for the wintertide to subside,
Making way for the nymphs of spring
To upswing with laughter and pride,
Giving life.
Warily she tiptoes
Down the crossroads
That no one knows,
Leaving golden leaves behind.

About a Girl

A soul
In the
Form of
A small girl

Planted a seed

With the heart
Of a lion
A mind with
A new found
Perception

Bravest of
The brave
A voice so
clear and
Pure

In these
moments
Of our
Planets
History

The hour of
Greatest need

A small girl
From the north
Of Europe

Planted a seed

Of which
We were
All enchanted

At no greater
Time
Were we
more willing
To lend
Our ear

With this gift
To the
Human race

A gift given
By our
Mother Earth

She spoke
The words
Of our Mother

To be placed
in our hearts
and minds

We all came
Together

In this hour
Of need

To heal our home

The planet

The small girl
Who planted a seed.

Natural Completion

Your soul brings mine to life like water to a flower.
Your whispers on my skin make me shiver like a cool evening breeze.
Your hands caress over me like water running in a stream.
Your kisses make me melt like ice in a shower of rain.
Your presence wraps around me like a blanket of stars watching over me.
Your arms keep me safe and guide me like the soft glowing moonlight flickering through the shadows.
Your love fills my heart with light that keeps growing like the rising sun.
All that you are completes me so perfectly like the setting sun on dusk.

Fisherman's Knot by Kenneth Ross - a Bristol NH piece

Laughter comes from the trees
over there by the river across the field.
A child’s laughter blended with an older, more weathered laugh.
The grandfather’s laugh.
The kind of laugh thick with knowledge. Warmth. Care.

A laugh belonging to a life lived right.

Now, the laughing fades. The din of midsummer’s
still air dampens a grandchild’s face,
humidity resting against the sun’s  voice.

Here the grandfather’s voice strolls into the heat:

“Wrap it three times around--”

A bluebird takes flight.

“--Now, loop it under, and back up through. You got it.”

picking-satchel of blackberry stained patterns

pheasants and partridge rise
through coppice and hedgerow gapes,
boroughs of  brush, terrified flowers
and abandoned nests,
‘fore the shotgun escapes.

from wiry snares and tweeded capes
their eastern sunned curtain’d drapes
in oleander bursts  of shot

in the mornings wake
 I  awake.

Esteemed  fox-bait in style they recommend
Its gone: they are gone.

Their pat has gone.

Jinn of buckthorn makes
a cider so strong, its drunken stings: in the fields the furrows made
made  so deep  no man can escape
deeply, and deeply I wish, I wish; I list the crops,
the rotation-systems and where the water lakes
in the rain -  in flooded stubborn pools.

I drain, abstain, I want to be coming to
a last leaf;  a blackberry feather and  crane of head
reaching  through for last  of season’s fruit,
grappling hawthorn as it pricks the palm
where the rising suns reflects
off bloodied black bark
and  these hands’ blackberry stains.

Clew Bay

In the tide that pushes time
Onto shores of lost convictions
Drowning in their pissed filled pride
With the sinners and contradictions

Sink like the stone
That you casted as a penance
Go hypocrites with your politics
Dive deep for your forgiveness

Go Grab the tail of the rolling sun
Burn your hand with all its stains
Then take them to the waters
The healing waters of Clew Bay

What If

I saw you on the number nine bus.
A winter’s night.
Snow in the air.
Trouble in your eyes.
You fought to disguise.
The fear you felt. The pain.
Contained in vain.
There were signs of your hurt.
Unkempt, a slight shake.
Lines upon a young face.

I tried to read your mind.
To see through, to reach the other side.
You stared right through me.
Oblivious to my concerns.
You lit a cigarette.
Away in a world far from that bus.
Somewhere mysterious.
Perhaps looking for a personal Jesus.
The silence between us spoke volumes.
I realised I was just a spectator

You were a stranger whose name doesn’t matter.
In two stops time I would never see you again.
I wondered about your life, who you were.
Where you were going. Why you were so sad. Was your life really bad?
A pretty face.
In a cold forbidding place.
Yet nothing I could do.
Holding back though not wanting to.

A man arrived from below.
You knew him well it seemed.
He sat alongside you.
I thought you looked nervous.
He looked my way.
I averted my gaze.
I could feel his stare.
His appearance was uneasy.
The aura surrounding him, threatening.

The bus reached my stop.
I departed. Trying to not look back.
You were gone.
I had done nothing wrong.
Perhaps I had done nothing right.
I left you to his mercy
On this bitter cold night.

Just another face we all see every day.
Needless to say.
What if?

The Epiphany

There’s beauty in deception and vileness in authenticity.
Your arms around me at night, the empty space next to me in the morning.

It was never your deception that shattered my inhibitions,
Never a fabrication, never a falsity that you uttered.

You were authentic from the beginning, never faltering.
What we had was a season of passion, unbridled and unashamed.
But seasons end, and the autumn of our love turned into the dead of winter.

Your heart was frozen from the beginning, but your embrace warmed my soul.
Your hands all over my body, making me feel alive.

You sparked a flame inside of me that I never knew existed
An existence I wish I had never known.

No, it was never your deception that turned me into the shell I am today,
It was mine.

In the night I feel you creeping in my soul
Lurking in the shadows of what I used to know.

Then daylight breaks and I’m sleeping again with your ghost.
What a bittersweet epiphany.

THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE ATTIC

"There's something in the attic,"
"What could it be?"
I hear scratching,
And it's really scaring me...

"There's something in the attic,"
"What could it be?"
I'm by myself,
The it, I don't want to hear or see...

"There's something in the attic,"
"What could it be?"
I hear walking,
Is it stuck and wants to be Free?...

"There's something in the attic",
"What could it be?"
Is it an animal a raccoon, opossum, rat or...

Maybe.....

Maybe.....

Maybe.....

"There's something in the attic,"
"What could it be?"
"Wait the sounds stopped!???
That is strange, it was loud and now lucidity...

"There was something in the attic,"
It's now a mystery...
"No, it wasn't a figment or a dream?"...
"Was it a ghost?"

Looking..........

searching............

Wailing.............

Lurking............
......................
......................

Found out!

Westward in our thinking.
Disappearing horizons beyond the edge.
A screaming population. Just a click away.
Fire walls to erase the corruption heading our way.
Come on and smother the hazardous truth.
For the truth is the way of the foolish.
Best to live in ignorant bliss.... believe what is screened. Do as we’re told.
Living as a spectator to the evil perpetrated on our behalf.
........killing fields for the enjoyment of all.
Transmitted in the very highest HD.

Just a platform to further the career of the men of fear.
We watch with eyes of innocence as the lies roll on and on......
Hoping that some good will grow from the calamity all around.
Yet we forget our faith is not set upon solid ground.

The world is at war.
Division is at its widest.
There’s a master plan.
Designed to facilitate the fall of man.
Just leaving the chosen few.
They know exactly what they do.
We’re not equal.
The masses will fall.
No bright light to shine from above.
The blood of a messiah was not enough.

Time is running down.
Don’t think it will end well.
Clocks are ticking.
Hope this finds you thinking.
