The Ways of a Black Heart

( prose poetry )

Why have you cowered for so long? Leniency reigned through his tender years, itís all heís ever known, you canít blame him.

Yet now you call upon an army, to bring reason down to bear, and also raise up, to wake up! But itís not meant to happen that way and thatís why it never does. A half-hearted intervention.

You and his father think that outsiders alone will and should pick up your mess? To lay down the law to a boy who youíve instilled in him a sense of privilege - of entitlement?

Who does that and still tells themselves itís for the love of the child, of any child? Based on such mindset, you canít give him even a ghost of a chance of surviving in this world at the rate youíve been going.

If he laughs, mocking you in disbelief, you need to make him see the shadow that casts across your face and hear it in your voice like the frost that would have chilblains set into a soul.

You need to let him know the ways of a black heart before the onset of the folly you have allowed. The list youíve given me, a litany. Your legacy on how to raise children to bear your cross. That others with evil intent, to let their scorn for you take flight.

Abducting the innocent who you thought were protected by their parents with unbridled spending yet hobbled morals no matter how well-intended you try to believe. Bring your child to the very altar you now plead for him to be saved from? †

So, you want the shit scared out of him without the laying on of unclean hands do you? †Look around dear, neither of you have had clean hands.

Bringing innocent souls into the world till the obvious had breathed its foil breath into your home where your babies havenít been able to learn any better. No better than their parents, so what do you expect? †

Just short of killing this predator with your own bare hands, unholy measures must be considered. †Plain talk of feeble threats simply weakens chances, and impresses your son still further to the other side. †

I donít know who else besides me youíve heard back from since you put the word out in your desperate way, because you need to be ready to listen long and hard before you have me in your ranks.

Before you put your boy up against the wall and I send out far more than I did at you just now. †If you want this to work, better get seriously humble and ready to steel yourself,

For the day when your child actually hopes for your forgiveness. For thatís the moment youíll also pray to dear God that you will receive his. †Now then...

Have I got the bloody job?

Trapped

In days of yore all we had was cruelty
When children worked to pay their keep
Sent up the chiminey with brush to sweep
For a scrooge at Hogmanay

We long for that Dickensian past
To gather round the roaring fire
And keep the ghosts of past alive
And carry on and joke and laugh

Be oblivious to the undermine
Our children massaged by the adverts hype
Coached to think that they have not
Groomed that plastic is just fine

And rebel and go on strike
not be Dodos like the parents are
not suck it up and go for par
Who f**ked it all up and cant repair

The church, the school, your arm to twist
To find the time you'll never miss
The price tag that will make you hiss
What the S**t I cant afford all this

The soccer mom pulls out her hair
The dirty clothes that need repair
For who was groomed now lets be fair
The mirror reflects a disheveled stare

Don't be a Bigot, Son

I know
the man who grooms you
commits
grave
sins
against you

teaching you that your
blessed family is
shameful
because

your father is disabled
and has many children

The very crime
murdering his reputation
bigotry
a bias crime

making it so much worse
in eyes of men
and God

Such a heavier sentence
awaits
such perpetrators of
hate crimes

Excellent entries, everyone! My entry isn't for voting, just to share a cry.

Did you all know that one of the most common reasons to run away is bullying? The child doesn't feel sheltered by the family from criticism and blames them for the negative bias against them.

My son was shamed about his family by kids and adults behind our backs for our little differences.

Thank you! Everybody who participated was a winner.

My choices were based on purely inexplicable subjective standards... based on how helpful you have personally been to me.... but thank you all for reaching out. Actually, you all reached me. Picking a winner was hard. Even picking the runners up!
