An example:

oral history...reflections...and intentions

I love a good story
not a tall tale, mind you
an honest accounting
experiences
lessons learned from them
laughter & tears
profundity
and it occurred to me
listening
to someone else's accounting
what will you take from me
when the sun sinks
below my final horizon
what did I teach
that you found of value
in all the shared years
fumbling through this baffling maze
this world called parenthood
there is no manual
it's hands-on learning
we screw up
contrary to childhood belief
we're only human
they might seem like big shoes to fill
but the contents are still...
just feet
someday you'll see
what it's like
from this side of the equation
the worrying
stressing
my one hope
is that I left a positive mark
on your mind
your bearing
your heart
you know I'm gonna spy
long after I die
curious
about what I left behind
what you felt worth sharing
when you begin your own parental journey
I will rest more than easy
if I've taught you
all my Roots taught me
giving you a solid foundation
to cultivate your family tree

Remember This

Peyton, Presley, Harlow, and Beau.
My darling nieces and nephew.
My, how you all grown.
You have the beauty of your mother's eyes.
Have you put that beauty to good use?
Let us not forget the lessons which we have learned through our mistakes.
Never, ever let a pretty face get in the way of your happiness.
Listen to others, become empathic, be giving to those who deserves it.
No matter who you've become, who you marry, or what you do with your hair, remember this:
Your Aunt Sarah loves you.

Tooth Fairies Last Night

Before the darkness of the sky grows light
And things in shadows come into sight.
Under your pillow you’ll see.
And for a second think of me.
And feel what I am feeling this last night.

A sprinkle of magic and money so small.
I have come because of your special call.
But your last gift of growing.
And your replacing dreams for knowing.
You can’t help it your older and that is all.

Oh small and beautiful one as you.
To see all things around as new.
The true world is not what it may seem.
Sadly its magic will disappear like a dream.
Your wishes will change and your interests will too.

My spirit is happy as well as sad.
For I think of all the times we have had.
As you mature you’ll move on.
In that way I’ll be gone.
But in the order of things it’s not so bad.

The time has come for you to face what is real.
But before I leave a small tooth I must steal.
It will soon be day.
So I must be on my way.
Vanishing like a ghost leaving only your heart to feel.

DON'T PITY ME LEARN FROM ME

As the day comes to an end and here I am wondering through the deepness of my mind as I reflect upon the many stages and moments within my life 60 years of it, for it has been truly an journey and travel and walk with each step I took it took me to an different image of myself, giving me an inside look of what my future will be cause of what it has become if I don't change for the betterment of my own life.

But not withstanding nor ever not misunderstanding the choices I've made along the crossroads of my life for by far it was never perfect as in the family life, in fact it was imperfect with so many flaws and imperfections filled with mental and physical abuse at the hands of a man not my father as my mother stood by and said and did nothing but watch her child get beat down.

But one day I told him the beatings kicks and fist marks is gonna stop so that day came when I had enough and I fought back with a knife cutting him ever place I could and can which cost me three to five, but even after all of that at times I don't even know how I made it this far within my life from running in the streets, getting that street life education chasing that paper to doing time in prison for things that I knew were wrong but yet at an early age I had to grow up before my time.

But I regret nothing of my past life for we all will have to go through somethings to get a better understanding of what real life is truly all about through your own eyes, so let me give you a deeper look into my life journey for I've been shot and I've been slab I've even been left to die in the streets because of the life I was living on the edge with my last breath, for I've been in the military in the times of war not even knowing if I will make it back home alive or come back home in a black bag with my army tags around my neck cause war is big money for the government.

For I survived an spinal infusion that left me unable to walk for three years and if that wasn't enough I had an heart attack giving me a stent implant in my RCA and to top all that off, there's an chance I have prostate cancer not that I'm looking for pity no don't get it twisted for I am just giving you an inside look at what life can and will bring your way to slow you down and living in the fast lane of life for bottom line you only got one life to truly live.

And Thus They Must Go

I am the past and they are tomorrow,
I am the east therefore they are my west,
I am the yesterday fading away,
For they are the morning to my sunset.
They are the arrows and I am the bow,
And so they go from me, forward and forth,
Launched into the future with projection,
To a time and a place I call True North.
They are a part but don’t belong to me,
A present bestowed upon me and so,
As time goes by they move going onward,
Tomorrow awaits and thus they must go.
They’ll be renewed over and over again,
Working on their visions and their dreams will come,
And I will turn into history for them,
An origin story of where they are from.
They are the horizon I have seen ahead,
Wherever they go I cannot follow them,
A reflection of my anticipation,
I will become the root from which they branch and stem.
They are the light that illuminates the road,
For generations and many other ones,
For they too will one day have gifts bestowed,
Building up legacies from fathers to sons.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this challenge! It always brings me joy when the decision is as hard it was this time. Each poem was deserving of a trophy for its own reasons. And that makes the deliberation all the more difficult. Congratulations to Wallyroo92 for a very deserving trophy win! And to AEmelia564 and Stoney223 for your amazing entries. Incredible messages and powerful writes.

Until next time...

My children have always inspired me and so I want what's best for them and that they live out all their hopes and dreams in a society where they will thrive.

Congratulations to Aemlia and Stoney for standing on the podium. There so many wonderful pieces but thank you to our wonderful host,  I'm honored to have been picked for this.
