24/30  Tomatoes

Tomato plants were to be caged lest they escape,
those wanderers, of course the cages had to be staked
to stay upright in that soft and rich soil that was put
in by my Grandpa to guarantee success of yields.

‘Tomatoes by the Fourth of July’ never panned out;
it was an extra early variety, supposedly.  Early girls
were small and good in salads.  Beefsteaks were
good sliced.

There were so many once they started
coming, my Nana went recipe crazy; salsa, tomato
sauce, the canning bath, and best of all, she let me
pick some of the tomatoes to take home.

On Playing Piano

Lately, I’ve felt guilty,
sitting for hours
fingers splayed across
ivory keys and singing.
So loudly,
you ask me to quiet down.

“‘Can you just whisper?””
(Words I have said,
over and over,
to you.)

I try to calm my
shaking voice,
but it just keeps
bubbling
louder and louder.
And the chill bumps
come again and again
and I cannot
stop.

I satisfy my guilt
because I know
you need to see this:
the loud mistakes
and cracking voice
and the healing.

Oh, child.
You are witnessing
profound healing.
You may not know it,
but eventually your
eyes will recognize
the pain I’m leaving behind

and the JOY
that I’m picking up.

specific love for hot days

The first magnolia flowers
cracked open today.
Giant eggshells
serving stamen
sunny side up.
Oh, and it was.
But I could not stay for breakfast.
The day, one like this, called me,
its voice in the gold light.
I rushed, it seemed to you, out
while you cooked your own hash browns,
pouting.
I am still unashamed about that.
Because inside
gets so cold -
tile floors are harsh.
even the gift of A/C
bullies me
at night;
this time of year -
Oh, Louisiana, my first Dear -
wants to hug me
like a comforter,
get all the goosebumps out of me
with its squeeze.
I truly don't mind
the heat,
the sweat;
the summer
is a familiar
bead
trickling straight down my nose.

Oh, Louisiana,
Lovers can never know me
like you,
hold me like you.
None of that.
Beside your lakes,
under your trees
I am like a salamander
content in the steam of my home.

Bathed in Moonlight

Whispered conversations as the moonlights haze
Grazes along the fields and the mountains both alike
Stealing away with it vacant promises and cherished delight
In contrast fluid, bathing the world in beautiful strike

Like an artist to a canvas brush fluidly in hand
Moving swiftly ‘cross the surface sweeping billowing life
Imagination and shadows run wild artist insight
On both the glamour of stardom and unrelenting strife

Cast into a dreamer’s dream or a lover’s hapless fight
Strange things have always happened while bathed in moonlight
Yet circumstance returns to normal with the dawning of a new day
While the shadows of yesterday slowly fade from sight

Lakeside 24/30

Most mornings, the pinched pointer
and thumb opens slowly, stutters
as blinks, relapses.

Rise the pointer and thumb, both curved,
move past the arm, the horizon.

Two pointers and thumbs, both curved
deign the placement of a lake, but first
stress water.

This also denotes the moon, first
framing the face and moving it
above your head. We put ourselves there.

And you move it towards you, as a setting
for a plate. Eat

Awaken, rise, view, eat. A circle-shaped seeing.

A train zooms by- set the rail and the pointer
and thumb start large, then vanishes
away from your body. Touch each other
and then bye.

Jump midway a joke
in conversation, you’ve missed
the point and someone says zoom, train-gone.
time to hitch a ride. It’s between A and B, no C.

Purdah Precipitation
(Twenty-Five of 30 -- Official DUP NaPo/GloPoWrimo 2019)

Ever notice how soothing falling rain
is when you’re lonely or merely alone?

Sharing comes easy with the precips
no one to make promises not to tell
and hiding behind the dark clouds is
always allowed.

Sometimes I might cover myself
with rolls of thunder lightning my way
when my path appears unclear.

I can never imagine ever being fearful
of the rain accompanied by storm clouds
rolling thunder, claps of lightning,
and the occasional strong wind.
I’ve always associated rain with healing
and cleansing.

I don’t believe an umbrella or raincoat
can do for my alone-ness
what a good cleansing rain  can do for me
as I go for a walk in it.

NaPoWriMo 2019  -  April 25th  -  No:25 of 30

THE ROYAL HOUSEHOLDS OF …

Things got bad. The king
insisted all palace pillows
be stuffed with feathers
from angels' wings -
So they were shot down
wings hacked off
like shark or dolphins’ fins
for soup or strange medicines.

The British Foreign Office Minister condemned
the Saudi’s mass-execution this week
of 37 prisoners for ‘spying’, etc
but when pressed on selling weapons
used by Saudis to bomb Yemen
forgot to mention it was because
there were no more angels left
to protect the Yemeni children -
regretfully ... “There is a moral dilemma here.
There is a deep murkiness here that we do not like”.

Then the king barged in
on the conversation, offering pillows
for children to rest their heads.
Realising later most of the injured children
were dead, retracted the offer and said
it would save money so the royal dogs
could continue to be well fed.

Ahoy there, Crew and Landlubbers following along.

Encyclopedicus, Thesaurus Rex, drunken Pirate Swine -
Been one helluva week!
No chance to refine
edit or simple critique
We hit the water running, so to speak
Some rowed, some swam
some towed by our mermaid friends
We wrote not spam
burning midnight oil
candles at both ends

To the NaPoWriMo!
Ahavati gave the order
We have to go! Can't afford
to waste time trying to rhyme
or alliterate - don't hesitate!
Hurry, squirm, worm your way aboard!

And the mermaids helped ALL of us
climb back up onto deck of our ship
even the one odd looking stowaway
and we continued onward with the trip
with wind and word at our unfurled sails
making up for lost opportunities -

no longer sluggish snails on the high seas!
It was the Fountain of Inspiration
discovered by Juanita Ponce de Leónie!

Or bust!

Tabasco Sauce!

Tabasco sauce! Oh, what a loss:
To spill it on my desk across
The journal I’m transcribing from,
And got some on another one.

From “In•N•Out” I got the pack
With box of food in my bike rack.
Then cycled home ran up the steps
And back inside, my lunch to prep.

I can’t believe I made a mess,
This project has me under stress.
A manuscript I need to send
Before this month comes to an end.

I need to eat at home, yet still,
To do the work that pays the bills.
And lead a life that lets me be
An active pen in poetry.

I’ll strive to be exemplary,
And stay awake when having tea.
Must think ahead before I toss
The next pack of tabasco sauce!

ps...you know...

dawn arose
to find me waiting
wind curling damp around my skin
eyes closed
in contemplation
just listening to the rain
scent of dogwood & apple blossoms
thick in the air
and my mind slipped away
another time
another place
idyllic
but for the fact…you weren't there
with every splash
as raindrops softly crash
I make a list
beauty to one day share with you
you…who know my look
my feel
stripped down & painfully real
I've done pirouettes
completely naked
giving you my every view
and you've loved it all
down to my most raw
I am overcome with...ahhh {awe}
that in this mad hen world
there's one such as you
and that you somehow found me
seems a touch of serendipity…
as thunder gently rumbles
my heart skips a patter
and I smile
where no one can see it
so{ul} deep inside
it brings to mind your laughter
a sound I much adore
and I suddenly ache
with the need to kiss your face
but I'm lost in the drops
and their lyrical massage
and at this moment
this kiss is much needed too
so listen, my love
to what my silence is saying
you know...
you always do

Acrobats and Circus Clowns: Day Twenty-Five

25/30

(villanelle)
Just graceful acrobats and circus clowns,
Loquacious lovers hung in trapeze words,
Our tongues do dance, our verses sweet go down.

In paddocks gait, the boys in harness pound
And swish hard tails with every quad incurred,
Just graceful acrobats and circus clowns.

Our fashion leather tight in phrases bound,
In high-heeled whip and scrape and stroke reserved,
Our tongues do dance, our verses sweet go down.

The way we whisper in each other’s sounds,
Our subtle understated short forms stirred,
Just graceful acrobats and circus clowns.

And sink our teeth in meaty lines profound,
To take our fill of offerings proffered,
Our tongues do dance our verses sweet go down.

Our breathings catch in endings’ voice resound,
That scream like heating cats in jungles heard.
Just graceful acrobats and circus clowns,
Our tongues do dance, our verses sweet go down.

Worry

Worry
why worry

the cardboard is a little soaked
the coffee spilled
no messages "you freaking jerk"
well at least not yet
the bars are down to one
and do you even remember
your banned

abandoned
to the streets
soiled sheets
yesterday's repeats
again and again
have you found your keys

no success
life's a mess
shivering in that hand me down dress
no one left to impress

fingers shield your eyes
the world a bust
another broken down bus
dropping you off
bidding you good-bye
