Poetry Contest

Read it and tell us all about it!
Greetings, Fellow Poets!  It's time for our "Poem of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'Poem of the Month Hall of Fame' and on the official facebook page for MARCH 2019!.

You have three weeks to nominate no more than two of you favorite poems from another DUP poet!

Please note the following when making nominations:

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. Please limit your nominations to TWO poems. You can nominate a single poem for two different poets; but the nomination maximum remains at TWO (no matter how many pseudonyms they have).  The majority of competitions on DUP cap nominations at one or two poems so there's no need to go beyond that.

No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

BIG CHANGE:

ALL POETS ARE ELGIBLE AT THIS TIME, INCLUDING PREVIOUS WINNERS!

Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

Any nominated member who wishes to opt out of the competition may do so by messaging me ( Poem-Worm ). I will contact the person who nominated you and request an alternate nomination.

Nomination Duration is three weeks followed by a week of site voting!

Souris Pour Moi

(Smile For Me)

Where have you gone my feisty little princess?
Your vigor and zest all but a shadow of what was once.
How I long for the smile that comes despite the hunger?

I missed those times when you can sleep dreamless;
When you can run and chase yellow fireflies without care,
And those moments when you can just cry without hiding.

Are you still there, burning dimly somewhere within me?
The rough passage and heated crucible wiped your innocence,
Or is it just your ignorance and foolishness that got taken away?

Will time be so kind to let you out before memories turns to Grey,
Faded and becomes clouded with illusions of youth amidst...
The brittle bone and dim eyesight of the altered wisdom of old?

If you can hear my plea, please answer me, let me feel you,
And once more be you, if not, like you just a little bit.
When no one is looking and I feel blue, fire up my torch within.

Let me see the road where I walk, even how muddy and steep,
Ease my journey, let me breathe in your golden essence again —
That child in me, stay alive and continue to remind me...

Not to be afraid of green monsters inside my head.
For delusions are for the sleeping, and I am still awake.
Not to waste a single effort you had made,
For everything counts, and I am not done collecting.
Not to forget that your choices were mine as well,
For whatever it was, it made me who I am, and still becoming.
To never lose hope and continue on living,
With a heart full of courage.

Let me look at you with my brown eyes under the shadows...
Of many sundowns and moon rises, of tides that ebbed and splashed.
To feel humbled with a gracious heart for the way things had turned.

Despite the many challenges of the road you had traveled
Of the many crossroads and fork roads you had chosen to take
I am here still hoping, not without scars, but all the better for it.

Keep smiling, and I will remember as I walk ahead.

A Lunar Serenade

On our cosmic voyage
Exploring the Sea of Tranquility
We star travelers three
Heard music exotic and serene

But this sweet concerto
Played in beautiful harmony
Was an inexplicable melody
Originating somewhere in infinity

Whether alien or angel,
O musician, whom ever you might be
Thank for being welcomed and received
With a hymn so heavenly

Forevermore

Lenore passed so long ago
When I heard with her dying breath
A whisper that our love would grow
Flourish over cruel, early death

I waited for her blessed return
Alone throughout the years
A raven on my Grecian urn
Encouraged naught but fears

He uttered simply "Nevermore"
And he seemed here to stay
I still mourned my lost Lenore
As twilight dimmed the day

I heard her voice at high midnight
A murmur from skies above
Forevermore a hint of light
Forevermore my love.

Recurrent

Birds call with spring
in tongues
humans cannot understand

but interpret still.

The heart is not deaf;
winter will end
its frigid dominance.

In absence of warmth
we experience belief—

like seeing only the hour
of sun to rise from rest;
as that egret alighting
from the eastern pond.

I never want to leave home;
your own being—
it is no less than pure
within me . . .

as all seasons are.

The Sea Captain

The ship cut the savage waters,
washing her with an icy spray,
A howling wind sloping the mast,
a dark shroud covering the day.

The swelling sea caused her to roll,
battering men on the weathered deck.
They clung to anything they could,
trimming the sails with a check.

The Captain exited his aft quarters
observing the work that was required,
But his thoughts were preoccupied
by the woman he long desired.

In his hand, he clung to a letter,
worn and crumbled from his reading.
Her final words etched in his mind,
the sorrow was lastly exceeding.

He shut his eyes, facing the sea,
It was his absolution, his peace
His hand let go of the message,
her lasting desertion released.

The minutes turned into hours,
with the captain nowhere in sight.
Work had to be put to a stop
so the men could end this plight.

Finally, they were able to search
as the fierce storm settled down.
They made a startling discovery,
a cold body they circled around.

Where the withered men stood,
blood seeped through the boards.
The Captain laid with vacant eyes
as his life ended around a cord

They broke out in a solemn hymn,
a somber cry from their throats.
The vibration from their singing
carried as white spiraling notes.

temerity

anything let go of is covered with claw marks
and you can writhe your whole life for it
everything i've heard in these rooms is all about you,
still somewhere in toledo after seven cups of coffee
a woman speaks of a man in eastern omaha,
a larger man,one of broader stature,
who keeps trying to tell everyone
the best thing the jews ever did was kill Christ,
but most of us are only here to get our sheet signed.

And who hasn't read even just a little of the book?
in spite of pyrrhonism and malaise,
the way the eyes hurt when the headaches come,
things get blurry to the point no bridge of the nose rub
or temple massage can help to distinguish
if one is a wise man or just another negative, miserable prick
with a worthless coin
things will get better just give it time,
but some of us might not have enough.

So suffer bastard
one day at a time is just putting suicide off until tomorrow
people, places and things,
amputate all you can instructions
Emily said "hope is the thing with feathers"
but i only have hollow bones, both ears and no syphilis
(or maybe I just haven't noticed if it's gotten to my head yet)
a lack of ability to almost articulate the damage
in a positive manner,
answer question with question,
when it comes to the whys' just because is never good
enough
make vague references from self diagnosis,to self treatment,
everyone wants to be able to play the piano, believe in ghosts,
think putting the bottle down was the best idea we ever had,
but not all of us can be so lucky.

Reaper requiem

Silent slaughter sends blood steadily streaming, as sadistic civil servants succumb to sinister self satisfaction. Satan himself stares stunned by savageries of societies servitude to simple sins. Car crash... cerebral cortex no longer making contact. As catastrophic calamities collide, creating certain cancerous carcinogens cascading through city compounds. Terror tests true thinkers who transcend top government tactics to topple the time left to terminate theologian theories, that tantalize and trick timid thought to total atrocities. Anonymous ambiguity aggravates animalistic archangels. Aiming aresonals at armies as they announce annihilation in the aftermath. All aggressions are annalized and accurately applied, as ape like aggressors attack anything altruistic. Ravenous wraiths rip rotting flesh raw, as rancid rats run ramped, ruining rights to rest, as riddles from the reapers rhetorical requiem raddles on repeatedly.
