Dear Black Girl,

Your rich chocolate and creamy skin shines. No matter what shade you are
God made you to be beautiful just the way you are because that is how you
Were made. I may have a different skin tone than yours and the jagged scar
On yours is a reminder you fight a hard battle for every breath you have to
Take. Nobody understands your pain and frustration because it goes back
Generations to the bloodshed your ancestors faced. I am sorry for all that
Because you did nothing to deserve any of it, but never let that backtrack
Your progress or your steps forward today. You are like a stealthy bobcat,
Strong and the world treats you like you the enemy. You never understand
Why you are labeled as loud or angry or being such a thing as headstrong.
Those labels are wrong. Why can’t the world let you have your own brand?
If you are still reading this YOU should never lose hope. You have a long
Road ahead of you, but it is your journey. It is your path and the glimmer
In your eyes that cannot be torn apart or dulled like an unsharpened pencil.
You face your challenges head on. Girl, you are a champion and swimmer
Heading to the shoreline. Become an artist as you create your own stencil.
You are sexy and you are magnificent. You are smart and you are fire. You
Can be anyone you want to be. You are someone real, authentic and true.
Never let anyone take away your story and your truth. You are glorious.

Sincerely,

The girl who is in your corner

Dear Black Girl,

I have a hard time even saying that
And this is part of the problem
I don’t want you to be labeled
Black girl
As I was once
White boy
And I cringe that I am now
White man
And I feel ashamed around
Black woman
Because when I watched
The Color of Fear
Identifying my own prejudices
Going back to late nights
Walking near Lake Merritt
I know deep down
I was more afraid of
Black
Than I was of
White
I hate that I was like that
I am so self-conscious
That instead of simply
Letting go of all that bullshit
I over-correct
I over-think
I am so self-conscious now
Around
Black people
I have made myself
Whiter
And when you’re older
And you meet
Someone like me
Who thinks your lips
Voluptuous
Your hair
Magical
Your color contrasts
Lustrous
You’ll probably wonder if he’s just
Fetishizing
Black woman
And he may not know that himself as
White man
But I have hope
And here is why
Bear with me
When in college
I took Native American Studies
Which was natural
My parents
White man
White woman
Who fetishize Native American culture
I developed a crush
On my professor with her
High Cheekbones
Nez Perce woman
I too was fetishizing now
Flash forward fifteen years
I am divorced from
White woman
Soul-searching
Lost
Meet someone on OKCupid
Whom I assume is
Swedish woman
She speaks Swedish
I try to speak a little too
Get to know her
And her beauty
She is
Kickapoo and Yaqui woman
Didn’t see it because of
Irish side
And the years she spent in Sweden
Without fetishizing
I fell in love with her
Native American hair
And unsmiling
NDN smile
And I can call her
Fierce and
Proud
I don’t feel like an asshole
My kids are the
Most beautiful humans
One of them looks
Kickapoo boy
The other seems more
White girl
Both are friends
With
Black boys
Black girls
And neither has any
Racial fear or
Fetishizing
Or anything else
To feel shame about

Beauty in what ever shade

Silky skinned,

Dark mysterious,

Evangelical Ebony,

Feline
All shades,

To me it it matters not,

Weave, dreadlock , straight or short,
No hair,

You walk with a radiant ' sauve voir faire' ,

Regardless,

Vivacious vessel of grace and inner strength,

Self loving sister,

Self hating  hoards spewing there divisive laws,

Which i detest and abhor,

I see past colourism and colionialism,

Luscious lips swing a sweet justice,

For all you have suffered throughout your subjugation,

When i look at your divine form,

You take me to a etheral place,

For I see past the imperialists  and misogyny,

Dreaming  of tasting the honey ,

Dining of the delightful,

Dane of diaspora,

Tries to sanction me,

For seeing your beauty,

Beyond racial lines,

Everytime you walk past,

I see a dormant  queendom,

Luscious lioness,

Theres more to you than video vixens ,

Kissed teeth and hip hop gentry,

You summon parity in humanism,

By by your mere presence,

Who knows if i will be ever blessed,

To have you by my side intimately,

For now I quite simply  tip my hat,

In salute to thee,

DEAR BLACK GIRL

You're not black anymore anymore then I'm white

Imagine that you had a large box of Crayola Crayons, the Super Ultimate Box that contains 152 different colors.  Upon a white sheet of paper and you’ve been given the task of coloring a portraiture of me.

Would you pick the White Crayon?

That wouldn't turn out so good, would it?

Now imagine you decided to paint your living room white and you had me accompany you to the paint store where the manager asks you what type of white would you like.

"Miss," he says, "we have several types of white to choose from; Powder White, Eggshell White, Ivory White and Pearl White.  Which type of white would you like?"

Would you say, "none of those would look good in my living room."  Pointing a finger at me you proclaim, "I'd like you to mix me up a couple cans of White Boy White."

Painting your living room to match my complexion would be a nightmare.  Your walls would be the color of blotchy earwax speckled with funky spots of purple.  Your living room would look anything but white.  That’s because I’m not really white.

Now let’s say I was given the task of coloring a portraiture of you using the same box of Crayola Crayons Would I choose the black crayon?

I think not.

Save your raven colored hair, you are anything but black.  Instead I'd select the same colors that make up the spectrum of a sunflower opening its petals to the morning sun.  From the Crayola Crayon box, I'd might pick Mahogany, Chocolate and Apricot.  I’d also use Metallic Sunburst and Gold Fusion.  Lots of Gold Fusion.

But alas my sweet sunflower, just as Solomon in all his glory wasn't as beautiful as the lilies of the field, there is no hue in the Crayola Crayon box that is as beautiful as you.

You're to lovely a color to color.

Melanin Muse

Dear black girl, please know the essence of your worth.
Know that our black skin is as rich and smooth as the soils of this earth.
Know that our ancestries are filled with kings and queens.
Know that you are bestowed upon a gold crown that shines so bright that no amount of darkness can come in between.
Know that we are the ones who represents strength and true embodiment of a warrior.

We cannot bleach out our skin to delete the chocolate shade that we should deem as royalty.
Why must we hide our nappy locs with someone else's hair, that ain't au naturale.
Why do we have to be judged by being team light skin and team dark skin.
No matter the shade we are all black and we all face the same struggles believe it or not.
Being any less dark or light should not determine the beauty we have from deep within.
Why do we have to deal with men trying to over sexualize us and call us bitches.
I swear we are all nubian queens and we shall be treated as such deities.

We are the creme dela creme,
The cream of the crop.
The diamonds in the rough.
The sun that continues to shine no matter how dark the days may become.
We are the fierce ladies who are the epitome of overcoming the toughest of battles and coming on top.

With that being said dear black girl if you are reading this know that God used his paint brush to mold us into the beauty and wonder of his eye.
Know that the world is your oyster and you are that shiny pearl who has the power to change the world one step at a time.
Know that it is okay to not look like others for our skin is unique.
Just know that we are in a class of our own that no one can compare to.

                                         Love always,
Another fellow black girl who lives to dwell in her self worth and title as queen
