Poetry Contest

What have you read on DUP that's freakin' glorious!
Greetings, Fellow Poets!  It's time for our "Poem of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'Poem of the Month Hall of Fame' and on the official facebook page for September 2018.

You have three weeks to nominate no more than two of you favorite poems from another DUP poet!

Please note the following when making nominations:

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. Please limit your nominations to TWO poems. You can nominate a single poem for two different poets; but the nomination maximum remains at TWO (no matter how many pseudonyms they have).  The majority of competitions on DUP cap nominations at one or two poems so there's no need to go beyond that.

No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

BIG CHANGE:

Previous Poem of the Month Hall of Fame members CAN BE NOMINATED ... but a poet may only win once in the time period from November 2017 - December 2018.

Simply put: We want to see a cross section of writers acknowledged.

Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

Any nominated member who wishes to opt out of the competition may do so by messaging me ( Poem-Worm ). I will contact the person who nominated you and request an alternate nomination.

Nomination Duration is three weeks followed by a week of site voting!

Running list of winners:

November 2017 ... NAAJIR
December 2017 ... POETSPEAK
January 2018 ...      LADY_OF_THE_QUILL

The Jelly

In the shallows
where you and I lay
our legs long to bake
in a warm rain,
the sand holds us - you gasping,
and the ripples cast shapes for the savouring of my eyes
and the souls of us grow unsteady and foolish and merge
for a moment.
In this moment,
there is a stinging, aching, a burrowing,
lust lives carelessly.
I remember home,
the soft singing of her lung
and the heavy sighing of his throat.
I remember them without guilt or fondness
but give them time and room to solidify
before indulging, sinking,
before stroking you again
and losing another part of my mind.
Heady and throbbing,
on a stretched and barren Devon bay, with hands widespread
and a heart beaten as if with a pin
for barbequeing,
you share me, before leaving your body here
to go stale in the Sun.
I will know you, what was shared, I'll call it back when I need to feel -
and always, in the deepness, in the salt water, in a place that's free of judgement I'll know your name.

Time

There becomes an anticipation of the finish line,
unlike the aspirations that drove you in life.
When once you felt whole, you did not realize,
until you are told, that you have little time.

Your dreams of the future becoming a reality
become dramatically obscured into a deformity.
What it does in our thoughts is cruel, and remains,
the biggest of monsters controlling the pain.

A happiness finds a miraculous path
when now you prepare for not coming back.
Relieve me , this bad dream, so eternally sad-
I think of what could be, if only I had.......

more time.

Talking to the Rain

I'm talking to the rain again
And it speaks to me in honest words
Delivered with gentle kindness
Designed to uncloud my judgment
It's here to cleanse this anxious mind
And set free emotions weighing on chest
I feel cold but I also know
That warmth is where it longs to lead me

I often trust its comforting nurture
And seek fresh perspective in its waters
So I pour my heart out all at once
Till it pours down on me with heavy truth
I always hope it falls in sprinkles
In case I'm not ready for the force in which it comes
But "you're your own worst enemy" fell from the sky in drops
And there is no umbrella which shields from that

I tried to run for shelter but darkness came
And quickly blocked every pathway in view
I lost the will to stand, stand up for myself
Then caved to defeat of my undying emotions
Overlapping thoughts an endless tormentor
No escape from intensity of this weather
A body soaked in yesterday's, frozen
Occupying space in the anguish of today

And like the sky
I rain

The ground is shaking, or is it me?
I just lay here helpless to the torrents
And get submerged in the flood, drained
Tomorrow could easily wash away
Eyes close and I have nothing left
Except remnants of hope that touched my face
Leaving stains of contentment upon my skin
To remind me where it's always been

But soon I'll wake to inhale the scent of rain fresh passed
And I will have strength to find light that often calls to me
"You'll be okay" it softly speaks
"But right now it's okay not to be"
Colours of better reflect in rainbows overhead
As I remember that I can move through life at my own pace
It doesn't matter how fast or how long
You gotta feel weak in order to be strong

And I am at my strongest when
I am brave enough to release all that weighs me down
Unafraid to feel sharp blades tear from flesh
Dust that has collected and stuck to my insides
Naked and exposed
With no sight of where to go
Rejuvenating my heart one beat a time
Alongside the rhythm of the rain

the hidden world of words

being a poet is about pushing boundaries
I push mine to the limit
sticking with what you know
is the difference between being at the beach
or playing in a sand box

at the beach the tide is going to come in
and wash everything away
writing your poems in the sand
an action in futility?
maybe to some
to me the old is washed away
leaving room for even greater creativity

sometimes you ignite
others combust
but you won't know unless you try

people may hate me
some will love me
but I write because I must
it's my passion
my demon
the cross I bear

the words come and I must free them
or they will harass me until I do
flooding my mind
until it drowns in them
they clutter my thoughts
with a constant word association game

I see them when I sleep
how they fit together
piece by piece
letters and words in geometrical shapes
dancing a hidden dance
only I can see

until I release them into the world
and these haunting ghosts are freed
no longer wraiths of my imagination

but living

breathing

beings

Indigo Soul

I give my life's blood to this lady
so she can create
my indigo soul
pours from my mouth
onto paper
and we tango

her thoughts, my essence
formulating words
conjured from the cosmos
she applies slight pressure
then away we go
dancing across the page
I swirl, she dips
her intellect, my tip

sharp as any razor
cutting all truth
separating fact from fiction
when a lie seeks freedom
I give her pause puddling on her paper
until she gives up the goods honestly

I am her life and her mine
more intimate than her husband
is Sir Quill of the order over writers

Honor Knows No Confines🛡

I: The Maw Of My Fate

Surrounded by judgement at the high walls:
The coliseum with its layered tiers,
The paying citizenry face Caesar,
Who’s stony glare speaks silence for my death:

A man trained in the techniques of restraint,
Planning his next move of knight taking rook.
I am executioner incarnate,
Turned inward, guarding that right for myself,

Warrior, gladiator; scored on my shield;
Blade & mace strikes that I’ve returned tenfold.
It is honor and glory to the brave
That awaits me as my life bleeds away.

II: The Way Is Certain

Upon his shield, feelers retrace his wounds;
Feather’d moths softly attend in darkness.

The drone of his breathing suddenly shifts
As mist rolls into the tent by torchlight.

With the portent of imminent death near,
Unguents anoint him in ceremony.

Sole utterance amiss in grave stillness,
Palpable as the arenas that bore him,

That bow as failed contenders’ vigilance,
And time grows short, as a girl of lineage,

With blood of the gods by decree ordain’d,
Solemnly rises, to sit astride him.

Honors, to offer of body and song,
The final journey to Elysium.
