I am lost
within
the darkness
of my own ignorance
for not having
the courage
to understand
Why
she said
Goodbye

ABYSSAL

I once voyaged through your eyes
Through an ocean of despair
And I saw my soul fading behind
Toiling to haul you back to shore

In spite of my ways, I bore my scars to you
And you availed them to pierce me through
Now tell me, what am I meant to do?

Years have passed us by
We wither under the rays of a stolen sun
And despite the ambiguity of recollection
It is life that we lost

If you could see through the blinding light
You'd see me bathed in the darkest night

Winter departs once again
To dissolve death in opened eyes
Yet this is the season I most despise
Far too beautiful for a wraith, as I

For what loathsome a creature
To be forever imprisoned by sin
And scour the warren eternally
For a single drop of amnesty

Catharsis denied
Veiled beyond the gloom
Following footsteps in the mire
Are they my own?

And that scent, flowing past me
Gentle as a whisper in my ear
Brought my heart to eclipse

I drowned for a dagger in my chest
And in those depths, was laid to rest

That hole never scabbed over
The blood has stopped flowing
And worse than you could imagine
Is the pain of being unable to feel it
Growing

My world is an abyss
In which I am the black bird
Silent pariah, untethered
Searching for an even darker place

Thank you SO very much for your insightful entries and participation in this comp!  Your entries add to this comp's "anthology" of beautifully-composed and heartfelt poetry!  In so doing, your entries wrap this comp as it comes to a close.

I've read EVERY poem, of course, and have found it difficult to NOT select them ALL as STRONG leads of this comp!  But, I've managed to narrow down my personally-selected nominees, not based on creativity or heart because that's what makes them ALL strong leads, but by how DESCRIPTIVE the EMOTION detailed while "Lost in the Dark." My selected nominees are narrowed down to five (5) selected entries.

I'm going to leave this comp open for PUBLIC VOTE, however, so that it's NOT just "THE HOSTESS'S PICK."  All these strong-leading wonderful comp entries, from the first down to the last, will have EQUAL chance to win by MAJORITY vote!

This is the FIRST comp I've hosted with such a HIGH number of entries and participating DUP poets!  I can't thank you all ENOUGH for the privilege of hosting this comp!

The Public has voted and selected EdibleWords' entry as the "Lost in the Dark" lead.

Congratulations, EdibleWords!

Grace and J_Jay_J_Jr:  Congratulations on being nominated Runner-Ups of the "Lost in the Dark" Competition!  I SO strongly wish DUP would award "Runner-Ups" as they do "lead" entries.

To every DUP poet that participated in "Lost in the Dark" Competition, thank you VERY much for your entries and providing me the PRIVILEGE and HIGH HONOR of hosting this competition with ALL your strong, heartfelt, and number of entries received!
