Poetry Contest

Write about album artwork
Get out your music collection and write poems about the album artwork!  Write as many poems as you want , no collabs, 2 weeks , any style, no novels .

Even if there's an album you don't own but think the cover art is cool , write about it anyway--old albums, new ones, classics, any artist or genre of music. Let the Art speak to you.

Post a picture with your poem(s) of the album or a link to a picture if you can't get one to post , so we can all see what you chose to write about .

1,2,3 go!

Thanks for starting off, Snug--can you edit in a photo of the album or a link to where it can be seen online?  Helps the reader to see what you're writing about. Thanks !

                                     A Taste of Dick Black

                             I don’t know if it’s his accordion
Or his God awful looking getup
But the Taste of Dick Black
                                   Wants to make upchuck

                                     Forgive me for my rant
                                    Please pardon my tirade
                                       But the Taste of Dick
                                      Makes me want to gag!

Johnny Cash

His name had money in it long
before any of these rappers did
Got hooked on his music
Sippin' Jacks as a kid

Stood up to his uncle Sam
And told him "Fuck You too!"
Said I won't be defined
When he sang about A Boy Named Sue

Sang the Folsom Prison Blues
For men like my dad
Stripped of their humanity
His strummin' was all they had

Hound dog's voice kissed
His boom-chicka-boom sound
Sang of Ira Hayes who
Died face down in the ground

Not a drop of Native blood
Could he claim in his veins
But poor was poor
And he sang of those pains

Sang high pitched gospel
A December night not to forget
There was Elvis, Jerry and Carl
A true Million Dollar Quartet

The Man in Black couldn't truly
Walk the Line
Speed and booze robbed him
One Piece at a Time

I still sip my Jacks
Listening to his country sway
I may feel Hurt but that good ol' boy
Always eases my day

Billie

orchids frame the portals of her executioner's escape

though she's never seen the bitch in her true form
just dressed as a White Lady

her whorish twin pimped out in small doses
by the same men who own her and her melodies

she sings of Strange Fruit
dangling above magnolias in Georgia
and bluebonnets in Texas

nectar of the fruit
fall like sunflower seeds
blackened husks cracked open
and spit out

only the flesh is needed for consumption
so till the soil with more shit
as long as it all looks

pretty

Houses Of The Holy

Apricot heat of
the sun
unseen
beats on little
washed-out buttcheeks

What palisades pull
upon your rawboned
knees?
Will your twiggy
limbs lunge through
The Crunge
& faintedly find reprieve?

Or,
will there be
No Quarter
for sallow souls as these?

Dancing through Days
(No, I know you "ain't disclosing no names"!)
on the anti-rain
plane

Naked love
Over Hills they came
& naked in pain
down & dusty...

away again

***
For the album cover comp. Led Zeppelin' s Houses Of The Holy album cover has always delightfully confused me, ever since I remember seeing it as a wee thing.  There are bits and additions for fans couched in here :)

Flammable Garden

Like seeds planted in a soil heart
Opposing harvests germinate
Don't let the words get lost in the weeds
Roots like veins beneath a clotting stem
The blossoms pale but I'm still reaching for the hem
I cough up blood and stain these bleached roses
Decaying as I die in my efforts to self cure
Like all the romance without the love
Gospel hype to sell the pints of God
Donated offspring
My sins make their boast in the face of sacrifice
Poison meditations
Give me my mind back as I commit my thoughts to peace
Like a ceasefire for the war that wages within
Photosynthetic flower petals exposed
I find my color in the light of an unseen sun
Painted by fire, I inhale heavens convection
X-ray my respiration and prune a dwarfed root system
Patch the holes in my leaking lungs
My stomach is a well drying up in an effort to sustain a wilting garden
Displayed in the green house of my lips
Tongue like a restless flower bed
Full of stones, I can't drink water through granite
Or thrive in the shallow grounds of the lusts therein
Singed by a light too bright to bear
I close my eyes in the face of the sun and behold this darkness with a blank stare
Baking a spoiled harvest
There is no scent beyond the fire when botany lips make better for arson...

Slot Machines in Spacestations

Beneath arch windows the mole graphs a ladder, with poisoned morals, and watches the fireworks
Denim cloaked nuns insult his memories caught on tape
With concrete chocolate and fleas in his cot, he ties his purse, balance sheet his skylight
Takes a reindeer to the pharmacy
Buys a general saucepan and a leather massage for a minute
Screwdriving a fleeting amplifier, fleas gingerly foster his scarfs colours
Flowerpot cooking under the moon, essays are a wheelbarrow
In a box
Pebbles for herbs bank and cripple his horsepower
Judo, screw it, lipsticked giraffes dance laughingly in the valley
Measuring raviolis, flighty leaf eaters skedaddle from sausage bombs
Dolphins in a cherry stampede, fish tear tissue in the inn
Leaf eaters...
Bar hammering stains their escape, greases the church pillars
Vote a cannon or a knife

Superficial Reptiles

Peeling layers of the flesh
Shed skin to reveal a serpent
Your eyes are a dead give away
Bluffing sincerity
Disregaurding an aimless remark
Ignore me and preserve suburbia
Conceded and yet putting out
You made a mistake
Now you bear the burden of a miracle
While you raise your waste
Obligated to a child like a shackle
Shopping for a prince to enchant a harlot
You're eyes have fangs
That strike at me
Shed your skin
You're a snake inside a withered shell of false beauty...

Renegotiating The Terms of The Sacred

You have me fighting for
What I should never have to ball my fist for in the first place
It comes as no surprise, the wreckage
You can’t wash your hands of the blood on your lips
Taste buds stained with acquired fascinations
You speak to prove the point of a liar
Born into a resistance to trend this dichotomy
Recruiting the lost to sail these seas without a destination
Experience never justified your ways
And your tears are falling in vain
I catch my head in my hands
Drowning deep in a shallow thought
My hands like vines poised by the duress of their treasonous chokehold
It’s easier to cast a stone than stand down wind of an accusation
God forbid I look in the mirror
When I’m in the process of shattering your window
Universal letters custom fit to the receiver
Take my heart out of the bottle
Will you find me again, or am I forever adrift
As I speak but go mute for your will to ignore me
As if my voice is a frequency you can’t hear anymore…
